Ohio River Sauger: Best February Fishing in Indiana
February 13, 2014
Whether your favorite pastime is ice-fishing, bass fishing on Lake Michigan, spin-casting, or trolling, our state has a fishing hole that is custom-made just for you. There are a ton of great opportunities for February fishing in Indiana and sauger on the Ohio River is probably your best bet!
Southern Indiana anglers who are itching for some open-water action should be gearing up for the annual sauger run on the Ohio River. These smaller cousins of the walleye appear in huge numbers at this time of year, and the action below the dams can be fast and furious.
Watch the weather to determine when the peak of the run will occur. Cold late-winter weather may push the run back until the end of the month, but when the fish arrive, the river will be thick with them. Try a jig/minnow combination right on the bottom, near riprap or other rocky structure.
Fishermen in northern Indiana can experience some outstanding action for brown trout in the harbors of Lake Michigan in late February. Steelhead trout fishing on the St. Joe River near Mishawaka can be good, too.
