With summer fishing in full swing, it’s important for anglers to have the right gear handy if they want to beat the heat. In addition to the usual fishing gear, I recommend wearing sunscreen and sun-protective clothing , keeping a water bottle readily available for hydration , and packing a quality cooler .

If you plan to save your catch and cook it up later , it’s a good idea to have a reliable cooler like the Leeward or Mission with you, especially during the summertime when the water is at its warmest temps. During hot weather, you should place any fish you intend to keep in a cooler to prevent flesh from deteriorating.
To keep your fish fresh , gut the fish immediately and surround it with ice in a cooler. You can also super-chill your freshly caught fish in a cooler after gutting – this method will keep fish fresh for five days or longer. To super-chill your fish, fill the bottom of the cooler with crushed ice and open the drain. Then add a mixture of 1 part rock salt (ice cream salt) to 20 parts crushed ice.
