On July 11, Houston-based Team Legacy landed a 927.7-pound blue marlin to win the Bastante John Uhr Memorial Billfish Tournament and claim the new Texas state record .
This year marked the third annual holding of the contest off the coast of Port Aransas and the second year in a row in which Team Legacy took the top spot, according to the event's website.
Measured at 137.5 inches, it took all hands of the eight-man crew to land the nearly 930-pound fish. Caught approximately 130 miles offshore, Team Legacy said the fight lasted 20 minutes but it was over an hour before the men had the marlin aboard .
The tournament-winning fish crushed the previous state record by almost 100 pounds. James Farrow held the prior record with the 876.5-pound marlin he caught on August 20, 1988, also in the Gulf of Mexico.
According to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), the current all-tackle blue marlin world record is held by Jay de Beaubien, who caught a 1,376 pound Hawaiian blue in waters off of Kaaiwai Point, Kona.
Team Legacy beat the nearly 25-year old state record to take home the Bastante John Uhr Memroial tournament's $40,000 purse, making their Friday afternoon fishing session fittingly bastante, which is Spanish for "more than enough."
