Gathering around a fire pit in your backyard is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, relax, and spend time with loved ones. There is something about a fire's ambiance that is calming – it draws you in with its mesmerizing, dancing flames and comforts you in the presence of its warmth. Pair that cozy feeling with a tasty beverage and good company, and you are sure to have a memorable evening.
Best-Suited Drinkware To Use by the Fire
Warm drinks taste best when consumed warm and cold drinks are best when cold, so choosing drinkware that will keep your favorite beverage at its optimal drinking temperature the longest around the fire pit is essential. Beverage containers with a leak-proof lid are also preferable because when closed, the lid will prevent spillage and help keep bugs (and ash if using a wood-burning fire pit) from entering your drink. So, what is the best type of drinkware to use around the fire pit? In my opinion, a rugged, stainless-steel vacuum-insulated tumbler with a lid is ideal, no matter what I am sipping on. Glassware, ceramic mugs, and plastic cups are not always practical for outside use because they can break easily and do not have the temperature-holding power that a quality insulated mug has.
You would be hard-pressed to find a more suitable drinking vessel for around the fire pit than one from Stanley, a company that has been producing quality, reliable products for over 100 years. In 1913, William Stanley invented the all-steel vacuum insulated bottle that many outdoors people still trust to keep their coffee piping-hot today. These days, Stanley offers an assortment of quality drinkware – from mugs to bottles to beer steins to growlers – and all of them are perfectly compatible with an evening fireside.
Here are a few of my favorite drinks to enjoy around the fire pit and the best Stanley drinkware to sip them from.
Hot Cocoa in Camping Mugs
Hot cocoa in a Classic Legendary Camp Mug is a must-have around the fire pit, especially on chilly evenings. It is a drinkable treat that pairs well with s'mores, another got-to-have sweet you will want by the fire. Stanley’s double-wall vacuum-insulated camp mug will hold 12 ounces of chocolatey goodness and includes a secure lid to prevent splashes.
In a pinch, you can use premade hot cocoa mix, but I prefer to make my own, and it is easy to do. Simply combine the dry ingredients (cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, and salt) and store the mixture in an airtight container. When you are ready to make hot cocoa, spoon two heaping tablespoons of mix into a camping mug and stir in one cup of hot milk.

Both kids and kids-at-heart love a mug of warm, rich chocolate, so be sure to make enough to go around. If you are serving multiple people, I recommend making a large batch of hot cocoa, pouring it in one of Stanley’s 64-ounce Classic Easy-Pour Growlers, and keeping it close to the fire. The growler will keep the cocoa hot for up to 18 hours, guaranteeing each refill as warm as the first cup.
I like to offer “spiked” hot cocoa to my friends and family over 21. Rather than pre-mixing liquor into a separate hot cocoa container for the adults, I suggest filling a Stanley Classic Easy Fill Wide Mouth Flask up with vanilla or whipped vodka, peppermint schnapps, coffee liquor, or whiskey (or whatever alcohol you prefer). Then, once everyone has their mug of cocoa, pass the flask around and let each adult top off their cocoa with the amount of the liquor they prefer.
Backyard Brews in Beer Steins and the Easy-Pour Growler
If you are a beer enthusiast, Stanley has some great drinkware options for you to sip your favorite brews from. The Classic Bottle Opener Beer Stein will keep your beer cold for hours, is large enough to hold two 12-ounce beers, and has a heavy-duty handle. It also features an integrated bottle opener and a stainless-steel flip-top lid.
Stanley’s Classic Easy-Pour Growler is an excellent growler to use for draught beer. It’s easy to transport with its carry handle and can withstand the pressures exerted by carbonated beverages, making it ideal for homebrewers and those who enjoy bringing craft beers from their local brewery home to enjoy around the fire pit. The growler not only holds 64 ounces of beer but also keeps beer fresh, carbonated, and ice-cold for up to 24 hours. Want to bring a beer-tasting experience to your backyard fire pit? Fill up two or three of the growlers, each with a different beer. Set the growlers on a side table near the fire pit with some pint glasses and allow guests to pour their own beer samples.
Iced Sweet Tea in a 16-Ounce Insulated Travel Mug
On warm summer nights, nothing beats roasting marshmallows over an open fire under the stars – except maybe doing it while sipping on a tall glass of cold sweet tea. Stanley’s Classic Neverleak™ Travel Mug is a great mug for everyday use and perfect for iced tea around the fire pit. It can hold 16 ounces of delicious tea, and its double-wall vacuum insulation will keep it ice-cold for hours. It has a unique 3-position lid that rotates open for easy sipping, then locks tight when closed. When the lid is closed, there's no need to worry about any ashes or debris from the fire pit getting in your tea.
Planning to host a backyard get-together around the fire pit? It’s easy to make sweet tea for a crowd and serve it from Stanley’s Adventure Fast Flow Water Jug. The jug holds up to 2 gallons (that’s a lot of sweet tea!) and will keep it cold for up to 13 hours (or two days iced). Set the water jug of tea close to the fire pit, making it convenient for guests to refill as needed.
