WATERBURY, VT – Two people have been cited by Vermont State Game Wardens on several charges involving taking bears illegally in Walden, Vermont.

James Paige, 59, and his wife, Sharon Paige, 56, of Middlesex are facing several charges relating to the investigation of the killing of a sow bear and two cubs.

On September 8, 2010, wardens executed search warrants at the Paige residence and another residence in Wolcott. Evidence seized at the residences included bear meat, electronic media, grain, scents, lures, and firearms.

Wardens later found Mr. Paige hunting from a baited stand in Walden. He was subsequently charged with several violations relating to the investigation.

Conviction of a violation related to illegally taking, possessing or transporting big game may result in a person being fined up to $500 for the first offense and up to $1000 for each additional offense, as well as forfeiture of equipment used. In addition, big game violations carry potential jail times of up to 60 days for each violation, revocation of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses for three years, and restitution of up to $1000 per animal.

This case is still under investigation and charges against other individuals are anticipated.

Anyone with information related to this case should contact Senior Game Warden Dennis Amsden through the Vermont State Police Dispatch, at 802-748-3111.
