Although Nevada is widely known as the driest state in the U.S., it is home to over 200 lakes and reservoirs plus 600 streams and rivers that provide nearly 400,000 surface acres of sport-fishing opportunity.

The majority of bass fishing in Nevada is in fishable still waters that consists of man-made reservoirs that vary in size from 1 acre to the 115-mile-long Lake Mead. A good portion of the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe are within Nevada's borders.

Lake Mead

Lake Mead has a maximum depth of 465 feet at full capacity and covers 150,000 surface acres over its 110-mile length. The most productive months for catching largemouth bass are May through September. Largemouth bass can be patterned in both shallow and deep water with lures fished in the early morning or evening. Summer temperatures generally reach 110 degrees, so carry water and leave a note as to your destination and expected time of return.

Willow Creek Reservoir

At maximum capacity Willow Creek Reservoir covers 640 surface acres to a maximum depth of 40 feet. Boat fishing is best, but shore fishing along deep, drop-off areas is also productive. The reservoir has good numbers of black bass from 8 to 14 inches.

Brightly colored jigs work well as does trolling small spinners and crank baits. The fishing season is open year-round, day or night. Not more than 10 black bass may be creeled daily with a minimum size limit of 10 inches. The possession or use of fish as bait, dead or alive, or parts thereof, except preserved salmon eggs, are prohibited. There are no restrictions on boats.

Lake Mohave

This 64-mile-long reservoir covers approximately 30,000 surface acres to a maximum depth of 120 feet. It is subject to fluctuating water levels and exchange flows. The upper 20 miles of the reservoir lies within Black Canyon and is cold all year thanks to deep-water releases from Hoover Dam. The remainder of the reservoir is seasonally warm and more open, with the widest section in Cottonwood Basin.

Plastic worms, live worms, and crankbaits work best for largemouth bass during the spawning season. For largemouths, March through June is generally best. Mohave's best largemouth weighed 11 pounds.
