Stocked Trout

Shenandoah National Park Area

Steve Reeser of VDGIF's Verona office explained to me that the stocked trout in both Shenandoah area impoundments and streams offer great late winter fishing.

The Class A waters are stocked a total of 8 times from October until spring and Class B waters are stocked 5 times. The idea is to have 11-inch fish available for anglers to catch and keep. Some of the fish are 14 to 15 inches long and a percentage of fish stocked are 18-inch brood fish. Three quarters of the fish are rainbows, but brown and brook trout are also stocked.

Traditional spinning anglers will find flashy baits such as colorful inline spinners work well. Powerbait in green and bright yellow work well, too.

Fly anglers will find that nymphs and streamers imitating minnows and crayfish will be the most productive. Be sure to read the regulations about trout waters.
