SPRO McRip 85 Jerkbait
Designed by SPRO Pro Staffer & BASS Elite Series pro Mike McClelland and built on the same successful frame as the popular McStick, the SPRO McRip 85 is a Jerkbait designed with a longer bill to get the bait down into the 8-10ft range when worked using 10lb fluorocarbon. The McRip features the exclusive SPRO weight transfer system, which increases casting distance but also allows the bait to suspend vertically like a real baitfish when resting.
The SPRO McRip works at a prime depth range for bass early and late in the season, excelling in cold-water conditions when bass are more lethargic.
The McRip also provides anglers another option when targeting suspended fish since they will often hover over deeper water and not be willing to commit to shallower running baits.
Look to use the SPRO McRip when water temperatures are in the 40?s to 50?s. Prespawn and post spawn flats and adjacent areas to spawning bays will be prime holding areas for fish looking to move up shallow with the coming warm water. Points and underwater saddles will also be prime targets even with warmer water when fish begin to suspend on baitfish. In the fall, fish will begin to school up on bait balls over deeper water and the McRip will be able to reach a lot of those particular depths.
Retrieval options for the SPRO McRip include straight cranking, multiple cadence variations applied to fish a standard Jerkbait as well as ripping which will cause the bait to flash off kilter and suspend helping trigger strikes from finicky fish.
The colder the water, the longer your pauses should be, giving lethargic fish a chance to react to the bait.
When selecting a combo there are a couple of options. If fishing colder waters and less active fish a 6?8? to 7?2? Medium Power baitcasting rod with Moderate Fast or Fast Action will fit the bill. Look for a reel with a slower gear ratio like 6.2:1 or 5:1 and spool it up with 10 lb fluorocarbon line. If fishing warmer water or more aggressive fish, a spinning outfit can also be used? 6?3? to 6?8? Medium Power rods with Fast Action will excel at imparting aggressive rips and twitches to the bait. A 2500 to 3000 size spinning reel loaded up with 10 lb fluorocarbon or for more action, 15 lb braided line with a 12 to 14 lb fluorocarbon leader.
In clear water situations longer casts and more erratic retrieves will trigger more strikes, in dirtier waters, longer pauses and shorter twitches will help to fish zero in on the offering.
