Savage Model 110 Gets AccuFit

Customize for fit and accuracy with Savage's new Accufit stock system.

There are many factors that affect a rifle's accuracy, from ammunition to rifling and form to fit.

Fit is extremely important. A rifle that properly fits the shooter is more comfortable to shoot, thus making it easier to maintain proper form.

Of course, shooters can use a gunsmith to customize a rifle for a perfect fit; however, this can be fairly expensive, and basically means that the rifle can be best used by a single person, or someone who is exactly the same size, at least in regard to length of pull and comb height.

This is especially a problem if a rifle is cut down to fit a younger shooter; it becomes too small as shooter grows into an adult.

To eliminate this problem of proper fit for shooters, Savage has re-introduced the Model 110 with a revolutionary new stock system called the AccuFit.

Available in numerous variations and calibers — including left-hand models — the Model 110 with AccuFit comes with four buttstock inserts and five comb risers for customizing the fit of the rifle to pretty much anyone's needs, regardless of size.

Each comb insert increases height by 1/8 inch for a range up to 5/8 inches, while the buttstock inserts increase in 1/4-inch increments to change the length of pull by one full inch, with different screws for each that are changed via a Philips head screwdriver.

This allows shooters to experiment with length and height until finding the correct fit, which provides the proper line of sight parallel the barrel. This makes shouldering the rifle faster and easier, and puts the scope in instant position with proper eye relief for a shot.

And since trigger pull and barrel bedding also affects accuracy, the Model 110 comes standard with the AccuTrigger, for safely adjusting trigger pull weight, and the AccuStock, which provides a secure connection along the entire action of the rifle for the upmost consistency in accuracy. The Model 110 also features a floating bolt head, zero-tolerance headspacing and a hand-straightened, button-rifled barrel.

For testing, I obtained a Model 110 Storm with AccuFit in .30 '06 Sprg. The Storm is the all-weather version of the Model 110 and comes with a gray composite stock and a stainless-steel barrel and action.

The ergonomics of the Model 110 Storm are good; the forend is wide enough to provide a secure rest on most objects, such as the wood rail of a deer stand, but small enough for a good grip when shooting offhand. Both the forend and the pistol grip contains black soft-grip rubber for enhanced purchase, and the bolt is smooth and easy for reloading quickly for follow-up shots.

Paired with a Bushnell Engage 3-12x42 scope, the Savage Storm showed excellent accuracy, especially after I figured out the proper buttstock insert and comb riser for my proper fit — the second comb riser and the third buttstock insert fit correctly, providing instant sight picture in the scope when shouldered.

While I was only able to perform accuracy testing with two loads — Federal Power-Shok Copper 150 grain and Hornady Precision Hunter 178 grain — over a couple of hours, rather than the three to four loads over a few days that I prefer, the accuracy was still impressive.

Both loads provided three-shot m.o.a. accuracy off of a rest, with the Federal load barely edging past Hornady by just a tenth of an inch in a three-shot average. Both loads; however, put 10 rounds inside 3 inches at 100 yards in a hunting situation, even when performing follow-up drills.

In all situations, the Savage Model 110 with AccuFit performed smoothly, with zero malfunction of any kind. The AccuTrigger was smooth with a clean break at just over 3 pounds, and the recoil pad made shooting comfortable, even during longer strings.

One feature I truly liked on the Savage Storm with AccuFit  — besides the ease of which the rifle is adjusted for length of pull and comb height with a Philips head screwdriver  —  is the metal four-round magazine. It fit flush and performed flawlessly, regardless of ammunition type or reloading speed.

Overall, the Model 110 Storm with AccuFit performed admirably in all regards, from accuracy to ease of changing out both the stock inserts and comb risers, which provided the proper fit for quickly taking a shot, especially getting back on target for follow-up shots.

As such, the Model 110 is definitely a rifle to consider, especially for shooters who can't seem to find a rifle that fits perfectly. And since there are nine models, available with numerous features in varying calibers, all the way up to the Wolverine in .450 Bushmaster, the Model 110 with AccuFit just might be the best overall hunting rifle Savage has produced.
