Your Best Spring Fishing in New Jersey

Angling options in The Garden State range from surf-fishing for stripers and bluefish to sharks and flounder along the coast to inland opportunities including bass, trout, muskies, panfish and catfish. Great fishing is never far from Interstate Route 95 and the Garden State Parkway and the time to go is now!

Union Lake

Most folks are surprised to learn that New Jersey's state-record largemouth weighed over 10 pounds, 14 ounces! Fisheries personnel indicate that several fish have been caught in recent years that could meet or exceed that record.

Union Lake is listed as one of the best places to go for March largemouths in New Jersey. Bass will be in their pre-spawn mode this month as they work their way into warmer shoreline waters. Noisy, flashy lures will get their attention as will big, meaty deer-hair flies, jigs and bottom-bumping plastics.

Coastal Waters

April is prime time for New Jersey's winter flounder fishing. Fish live or cut bait directly on the bottom and be ready for the flounder's tentative bite — wait too long and they'll steal your bait!  Fish may be taken off bridges and piers as well as from shore or in boats anchored in 20 feet of water or less. Release smaller fish and hold out for the larger "door mats."

Lake Hopatcong

The muskie action starts to pick up this month. Target weedy areas and visible structure using typical bass-fishing techniques and lures, or troll near weed beds and channels using flashy wobblers. Muskies are most active in daylight and prefer shallow, quiet water away from beaches and recreational boat traffic.
