Your Best Spring Fishing in Maryland

Your Best Spring Fishing in Maryland

There are some incredible opportunities for spring fishing in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay area, but there are also some excellent freshwater fishing opportunities for trout, bass, muskies, pike, panfish and a wide assortment of popular inland species.

March

Youghiogheny Reservoir

Maryland's largest freshwater reservoir provides some of the Mid-Atlantic's best largemouth bass fishing and is open year-round with some restrictions. The Yough' contains excellent shoreline habitat where big largemouths can be caught from shore or boat using standard spinnerbaits, diving crankbaits and plastics. Fish slowly in shallow water and over weeds, and then gradually probe the deeper water using jigs and Carolina-rigged rubber worms.

April

Conowingo Reservoir

Maryland fishermen looking for king-sized muskies should look no farther than the 4,000-acre Conowingo Reservoir. Muskies are found through the lake but the hottest action starts near the dam. Boaters trolling using large, shallow-diving plugs have the best luck, but anglers should be prepared to spend some time on the water for each fish caught. A hungry muskie will not be denied but when they don't want to play all you can do is troll on.

May

Chesapeake Bay

Maryland is home to some of the best striped bass fishing in the East and Chesapeake Bay is the place to be this month for lunker lineside. Big fish may be caught from shore or boat using live and cut baits, lures, big jigs and trolled flies. Hire a charter boat to learn the ropes and then rent a boat and strike out on your own.
