Situated in the Northwest Territories and partly inside the Arctic Circle is Great Bear Lake. Dave Mercer, host of Dave Mercer's Facts of Fishing on Outdoor Channel, says that it is one of a kind, hundreds of miles from the nearest human being and fished by a limited amount of people each year. Dave joins The Revolution this week to talk about his trek to Great Bear Lake, the famous Plummer's Lodge and the 4 special episodes that will chronicle his adventures there. Regardless of where you are fishing, the ability to break down a body of water is important. Dave tells Jim and Trav that talking to locals and asking the right questions can, in many cases, help you narrow down your field extensively. He'll explain what kind of questions you should and should not be asking and he'll also talk about the importance of learning from each cast, each fish and making educated guesses to turn the odds in your favor. Finally, embrace the cold weather and let Dave school you on ice fishing. Dave says that he doesn't think of ice fishing any different than open water fishing, other than the playing field has been sealed. Covering a lot of water, instead of just sitting over one hole and waiting for a fish to swim by is important if you want to have success. Dave tells Jim and Trav that it's not uncommon to drill more than 100 holes a day, so he can fish the same areas he does when fishing open water. By transferring waypoints onto a hand-held device, he can target the same weed edges, drop offs, etc., and better pinpoint fish. Tune in for this fun two-part interview with Dave Mercer!

The wind has been blowing and a slight warm up across the Midwest has ice coming off the lakes. CatDaddy is ready and waiting when this happens because it signals the shad kill. CatDaddy says that fishermen can take advantage of this natural kill off and collect some of the hundreds of dead shad on the banks. Not only can they stock up on bait, but they also save a lot of cash when they don’t have to purchase it from the store. Find out more about using the shad kill to your advantage. Also tune in as CatDaddy talks about some of the appearances and seminars he’ll be doing in the coming month, in addition to some of his favorite new gear for the year.
