Watch Pro Andrew Upshaw Catch Huge Toledo Bend Bass

FLW bass pro Andrew Upshaw goes to his knees to fight a 7-pound Toledo Bend bass during a recent press event.

By Scott Bernarde

It is no surprise to anyone that Andrew Upshaw knows how to catch big bass at Toledo Bend.

The FLW pro, who was the first college qualifier for the Bassmaster Classic (2012, Red River, La.), grew up on the banks of the huge reservoir located on the Texas-Louisiana border.

Upshaw showed me how to do it during a recent outdoors writers camp with the pros hosted by Lew's tackle and Gene Larew and Bobby Garland lures.

Armed with an 8-inch Gene Larew Tattletail Worm and a "big ol'" jighead, Upshaw coaxed the monster out of 24 feet of water, going to his knees, then to his back to boat it.

A short time later, he hooked another whopper that hit a deep square-bill crankbait right at the boat, darted underneath and flopped off the hooks on the other side of the boat.

It was the second straight week Upshaw found big fish on his home lake.

On May 6, he won an FLW Bass Fishing League tournament on Toledo Bend, catching a five-fish limit of 30 pounds, 15 ounces, more than 7 pounds better than the second-place angler. He won $5,257.

Most of those fish came on the Tattletail, Upshaw told the

"I was fishing deep, in 20 to 24 feet of water, in areas near Three Mile Bridge," he told the website. "I'd find four or five stumps in a row along a breakline. The best stumps were right where it dropped from 20 to 24 feet. Once you find them relating to a specific depth on Toledo Bend that's where they will be all over the lake."

Sometimes you have to fish a bait that allows you to cover a lot of water efficiently. When you're on the search for bass that have moved into deeper water off the bank and away from obvious holding spots, a swimbait can locate them.

On the Search with Swimbaits

One of the best imitations of a wounded baitfish is the soft-plastic jerkbait, or fluke. A fluke darting just beneath the surface can be too much for a bass to resist. Rig it and fish it according to water conditions and cover to make this great bait even more effective.
