Wild turkey season doesn't begin in the state of Indiana until April, but at least one tom has already met his fate.

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office posted info and photos on Facebook Tuesday showing an unlucky turkey that struck an SUV head-on.

The bird went through the center windshield of the vehicle, which was traveling west on U.S. Highway 20 in LaPorte County, located in northern Indiana. Only the turkey suffered serious harm from the collision.

According to the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office:

"As they traveled ... a wild turkey flew into the path of their rental vehicle. The wild turkey was impaled in the center of the windshield.

The 30-pound Tom was killed on impact and fortunately the family only suffered minor cuts from the glass."

The sheriff's office said the family from New Jersey had just left the University of Notre Dame, where a daughter had been recently accepted, when the incident happened.

The office also warned motorists to keep an eye out for active turkeys this time of year.

"Mating season for wild turkeys means that they are often on the move and can be as hazardous as deer," the agency said in the Facebook post.

The Indiana spring wild turkey season begins soon.

The youth season is April 22-23, and the regular season is April 26-May 14. Hunting hours are one half-hour before sunrise until sunset.

Indiana also has fall and winter seasons in October and December-January.
