Tournament Dates Set for South Carolina Youth League

The new Youth Bass Fishing League Clubs, sponsored by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and The Bass Federation, have announced tournament dates for the 2011 season.Dixie High School in Due West is home to the Hornet Anglers, one of the first members of the new Youth Bass Fishing League. Students from Dixie, Barnwell County Career Center in Blackville, Bonds County Career Center in Greer, Camden High School, Saluda High School and Westview Middle School in Goose Creek have scheduled several club level fishing events to help the student anglers get experience on the water and qualify for The Bass Federation State Tournament on Lake Murray, May 21.

Contact Aquatic Education Coordinator Lorianne Riggin at (803) 737-8483 or RigginL@dnr.sc.gov to find out more about the Bass Fishing Clubs and their tournaments.It's more than just the thrill of reeling in the big one and enjoying time with friends, fishing club members also learn information about fisheries management, artificial lures, attractants and more. If the Youth Bass Fishing League is able to recruit 16 or more high schools to get involved that express a desire for a state championship, then the South Carolina High School League can sanction bass fishing as a high school sport. There are currently five high schools and two middle schools.Interested in forming a bass fishing club at your school and becoming a part of the Youth Bass Fishing League? All you need to do is get a minimum of six students (within the 11-18 year old range) with dues paid and you can have a Youth Bass Fishing League Club. You'll also need an adult at your school to help lead the Youth Bass Federation Club, provide advice and help arrange at least two club tournaments, fundraisers, speakers and other learning sessions pertaining to fishing for club meetings.
