Things You Need to Know About the 2013 Bassmaster Classic

In just over a week, from Feb. 22 - 24, the event that?s often referred to as ?the Super Bowl of bass fishing? will get underway. Yes, the 2013 Bassmaster Classic is almost here, and this year?s event, which is being held on Grand Lake o? the Cherokees in Tulsa, Oklahoma, promises to be one for the ages. WFN will be partnering with Wired2Fish to bring you coverage of the 2013 Bassmaster Classic. Be sure to check back throughout the weekend for updated results, news, and more. The 2013 Classic has a lot going for it, and without further ado, WFN is pleased to present our list of things to keep an eye on this year.

How Grand is Grand Lake?

#Grand Lake o' the CherokeesJDMcGreg
Nestled in the foothills of the Ozarks, Grand Lake o? the Cherokees has a surface area of 46,500 acres, and is a fairly deep and rocky lake. It?s consistently ranked among the top bass fishing lakes in the country, which might lead you to think that the bite will be easy for this year?s Classic. However, this isn't necessarily true ? February is NOT known as a prime time to fish there. There?s also a distinct lack of vegetation, and much of the shoreline is made up of rocks. It?ll be interesting to see what the bite will be like; if it?s slow, we could be in for a tight tournament. It should also be noted that a couple of anglers participating in this year?s Classic have won Elite Series events on Grand Lake in the past ? Mike McLelland won an event in 2006, and Kevin VanDam won in 2007. However, these events took place in the summer, and February will be a totally different beast.

The Ins and Outs of Tulsa

#The Bank of Oklahoma Center in Tulsa
The host city of this year?s Classic is the second-largest city in Oklahoma, with a metropolitan area that has almost a million people residing in it. The weigh-in will be taking place at the Bank of Oklahoma Center (BOK), which is a 1.5 hour drive from Grand Lake. The stadium can seat 19,000 people, though, so it?s not difficult to see why it was chosen as the weigh-in location.

What Techniques Will Work?

While February isn?t known as a good month for fishing on Grand Lake, it?s still considered to be a very angler-friendly body of water. The lake has been known to produce good results on suspended jerkbaits in the winter months, so this is a lure presentation that many anglers will probably utilize.

Chris Lane Looking to Repeat

After his convincing victory at the 2012 Classic, Chris Lane will be looking to repeat a performance that saw him win by more than 3 lbs at this year?s event. History, though, is certainly not on his side: only two anglers, Kevin VanDam and Rick Clunn, have ever won the Classic two years in a row. Lane is going into the tournament with all kinds of confidence. The question is, will it pay off?

Will ?The Curse? Strike Again?

#Edwin Evers is an Oklahoma native who will be participating in the 2013 Classic.Seigo Saito
Every major North American sport has some sort of curse associated with it. Fishing is no different, as the Bassmaster Classic has the aptly-named ?Curse of the Bassmaster Classic Local Favorite.? Since the tournament began in 1971, only one home-state angler has won the event ? in 2007, Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Alabama won the Classic held on the state?s Lay Lake. Thus far, he?s been the only angler able to beat the dreaded ?Curse.? The 2013 Classic will see several Oklahoma anglers participate, including Edwin Evers, Tommy Biffle, and Jason Christie. Christie is perhaps the most interesting story, as it?s his first ever Classic, and he lives about an hour away from Grand Lake. Will any of these anglers triumph over the ?Curse?? We?ll find out.

More Than Just the Classic

While the actual Classic itself is definitely the main event of the weekend, it?s far from the only thing to do. B.A.S.S. and its partners have lined up a number of fun events for fans who will be making their way to Tulsa, including:
    • Outdoor Games Zone: This area will contain some awesome events and exhibits, including a 30,000 gallon swimming pool that will be the site of the Super Retriever Series Eukanuba Super Dock event - a dog jumping competition. If that?s not enough, there will also be a Daisy Inflatable Shooting Education Range, where kids aged 10 and up can learn how to safely handle and fire a Daisy airgun.

    • The Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo: The Games Zone is only one section of this Expo, which will be held in the Tulsa Convention Center. Vendors, exhibits, and more will be on hand for fans to check out.

    • The Timberworks Lumberjack Show: Taking place inside the BOK Center on Saturday and Sunday, this event will see competitors show of their skills in events such as Speed Carving and the Axe Throw, among others.

  • Carhartt Bassmaster College Series: On Sunday, college anglers will compete against each other for the right to call themselves ?College Classic champs.? Arkansas won last year and will be defending its title against Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State University.
