Texas Angler Takes Top Prize in Tarpon Tournament
Greg Smith of Laguna Vista, Texas, was named overall champion at the 37th annual Don Hawley Invitational Tarpon Tournament
that ended June 10, after releasing 11 tarpon
.Smith fished with Captain Scott Collins of Marathon, Fla., over the five-day test of will and muscle, and is no stranger to winning fly-fishing challenges. In May, Smith was named grand champion at the Florida Keys? Outback Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament.Steve Ward of Coppell, Texas, won the 12-pound tippet division for releasing six fish. He was guided by Captain Rick Murphy of Homestead.The 16-pound division winner was Kevin Lyden of Port Chester, N.Y. He scored four releases with Islamorada?s Captain Greg Poland at the helm.The tournament is a major fundraiser for the Don Hawley Foundation that helps backcountry guides in times of need and for Florida Keys youth scholarships.Twenty-five anglers fished the tournament, releasing 52 tarpon in the 12-pound division and 13 in the 16-pound division.The 2012 tournament is scheduled June 3-8.
