The state record sheepshead caught by a Maryland angler earlier this month beat the previous record set last year.
A Maryland angler who was fishing for white perch and rockfish off South Marsh Island turned in a state-record catch in another catergory, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources said.
Dave Alveberg, of Deal Island, set a record in the Chesapeake Division with a 13.73-pound sheepshead, the agency said in a news release . The record fish was caught Aug. 17 in four feet of water near Tangier Sound, and is the fourth state record set so far in 2017 .
The previous record was 13.3 pounds, caught by Dan Thomas in 2016.

Alveberg was using soft crab as bait when his line went "haywire," according to the news release.
"Seeing something like this on my boat was amazing," Alveberg said.
The record weight was confirmed by Brent Malone of How Sweet It Is market in Somerset County.
Other state fishing records set this year in Maryland:
Muskie : 32.5 pounds, caught by Tessa Cosens, May 6, Upper Potomac River.
White Catfish : 8.27 pounds, caught by Jacob Vosburgh, June 1, Lower Potomac.

According to the DNR, fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are not eligible for record consideration.
Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out the state record application and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325. The department suggests the fish be immersed in ice water to preserve its weight until it can be checked, confirmed and certified.
