Small Game Pursuit

Featured Guests: Tom Miranda, Mark Peterson, Mrs. Bunny

This week on The Revolution with Jim and Trav presented by Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network, we're in a small game pursuit as we hunt and trap furbearers and other neat critters. In years past, many of hunters cut their teeth on small game. In fact, small game hunting was the traditional path to one day becoming a true, bonafide, big game hunter, but that's no longer the case. This fast paced hunting pastime, is largely underrated and presents a broad array of challenges. Plus, it provides a solid foundation for learning skills and traits that are essential to all forms of hunting. Joining us in this epic adventure will be Tom Miranda of Mathews Territories Wild seen on Outdoor Channel, plus Mark Peterson with Cabela’s Instinct on Sportsman Channel and our very own Mrs. Bunny.

Tom Miranda is a prolific archery hunter and the host of Mathews Territories Wild on Outdoor Channel. Tom’s accomplishments with a bow include more than 60 whitetail deer on video, Africa’s Big Six and the 29 North American Big Game Animals, as well as being the first bowhunter to document the archery SUPER SLAM on video.

Tune in as Tom joins The Revolution to talk about his start in the outdoors as a trapper. Tom credits his work ethic, drive and success today to trapping. “As a trapper you have to have a really high level of work ethic.

There’s skinning, stretching and fleshing and if it’s raining, snowing or sleeting, you can’t say I’ll go out tomorrow and hunt. You’ve got to go out and check your traps every day.”

Tom talks about one of his favored traps as well as the care and maintenance required to keep your traps in good working order. He’ll discuss how he boiled his sets with walnut hulls to protect them from rust and dye them a darker color, as well as waxing them for peak performance. Tom will also highlight the species he concentrated his efforts on the most, discuss a government trapping job he held in South Dakota, and give his insight when it comes to the fur market and the factors that affect the prices. While he may be known for his impressive big game accomplishments, Tom Miranda is an ultimate outdoorsman with skills that span the gamut when it comes to hunting all wild game.

Small game animals present the perfect opportunity to introduce kids to hunting and help them develop not only their hunting skills, but also their tracking and basic woodsmanship skills as well. Mark Peterson of Cabela’s Instinct on Sportsman Channel joins Jim and Trav and offers his take on setting kids up for success in the great outdoors. While many kids today are cutting their teeth on trophy class bucks, Mark isn’t convinced that it’s the best way to start them out. Instead, he says he prefers to build his kids up to that point by starting with small game like squirrels and rabbits. Mark says that starting kids with small game gives you the opportunity to teach them about the woods and other game as you hunt and it also is a good alternative to sitting in a blind where a kid’s attention span may quickly expire.

He’ll then turn his attention to teaching kids about where food comes from. “Feeding hungry people and feeding my family is what it's about. As much as I love the thrill of the chase and the feeling of success when I get the kill, the fact that I can feed hungry people at the same time makes it worth that much more.” As a hunter who has traveled the world Mark says that kids in other countries know where their food comes from and what it takes to get it to the table. However, young Americans don’t seem to be as in tune with where their food is coming from. Mark sees hunting as a great opportunity to teach kids this important lesson. Tune in for more from Mark Peterson of Cabela’s Instinct.

Fall hunters generally focus almost solely on big game animals, however, there is a treasure trove of small game waiting in the woods for those hunters who are willing to pursue them. Mrs. Bunny joins Jim and Trav to talk about hunting rabbits, without a hound. It is undoubtedly easier to bring home your bag limit with the help of a dog, however, if you know where to focus your efforts you can easily shoot enough for rabbit stew.
They’ll then talk predator management via trapping coyotes. “Scientific research confirms that effective trapping prior to the annual fawn-drop can restore fawn survival rates depressed by predators.” Trapping with success requires a unique skill set that is often honed over many years. Jim, Trav and Mrs. Bunny look at a few mistakes that rookie trappers often make, and offer up some advice on how to avoid these common blunders. Tune in.
