This week on The Revolution with Jim and Trav Presented by Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network, we've got the cold hard facts on precision winter fishing and contrary to popular belief, multiple species of fish are still catch-able, even as the mercury plummets. So, while most outdoorsmen and women are hitting the duck sloughs and tromping through open fields for upland game, we're scratching the January fishing itch with just the right techniques to catch a mess of fish. Joining us on our fishing expedition for an exclusive two-part interview will be Jon Baker of Jon Baker’s Guide 4 Adventure, plus the 2015 FLW Tour Rookie Of The Year Zack Birge from Major League Fishing’s GEICO SELECTS and The Revolution's catfishing expert CatDaddy.

Jon Baker is an adventurer, angler, hunter, guide, survivor and outdoor enthusiast. As a resident of the great state of Alaska, Jon guides outdoorsmen and women on fishing and hunting adventures that most only dream of. Alaska is an outdoorsman’s paradise, but it isn’t without its set of challenges as well. An experienced guide can make outdoor adventures much more enjoyable and successful. Jon as well as co-hosts Brad Bonnett and Dorian Thompson have extensive experience guiding in Alaska and they showcase their passion for fly fishing on Jon Baker’s Guide 4 Adventure on Sportsman Channel. Jon highlights some of the upcoming adventures set to appear on the show and talks about the excitement they offer. He also says they use the show to educate viewers about the hidden dangers of Alaska like changing weather and dangerous wildlife. So, how do you prepare for a trip to Alaska? Jon says as a guide, he offers clients detailed lists of what they should bring, but cautions that preparing for remote trips is a whole different experience. “You still have to go as light as possible but yet you have to cover your bases with good rain gear and a good layering system. Once they get on that float plane out of Anchorage, there’s pretty much no going back.” Then, don’t miss “Part 2” of Jon’s interview where he looks back at a bad accident in 2010 where he fell 400 feet down to the edge of a cliff and had to fight for his life to survive.

Is it worth your time to get on the water and fish when the mercury is dropping to brutal levels? Zack Birge, of Major League Fishing GEICO Selects on Outdoor Channel says, “You can catch fish, I don’t care how cold it is or how hot it is, you can catch fish every single day of the week.”

Zack joins Jim and Trav this week to discuss strategies for hooking up in cold weather. Fishing isn’t a lost cause right now, Zack says anglers just need to slow down. While fishing vertically is an effective way of catching fish, he admits he doesn’t have a lot of patience for this method and instead prefers to drag a jig or small crankbait with a tight wobble. The key to your success just might be held in your electronics. “Using your electronics this time of year can usually give you one of the best days of fishing you’ve ever had if you can find the fish. They are going to be grouped up, and there are going to be a bunch of big fish that you can catch. You just have to get out there and hunt for them.” Zack encourages anglers to take this time to get on the water and idle around, locate fish and spend some time really learning how to utilize electronics.

You can find Zack on the wildly popular Major League Fishing GEICO Selects on Outdoor Channel. He equates the competition to a major adrenaline rush that forces you to give 100% from start to finish or risk being out fished by fellow anglers. Find out more about Major League Fishing here.

CatDaddy says the blue cats have adjusted to the polar vortex and have put their long underwear on making the fishing action a little more difficult. He tells the boys he recently targeted a spillway that was gushing hoping to hook up with some large blue cats, however a combination of plentiful bait fish and rough water foiled his success.  After nearly six hours on the water, CatDaddy says they didn’t get a bite. So, what is the take-away? CatDaddy says, “They probably were belly tight and bloated up. They are probably gorged out and there wasn’t anything to entice them with that they hadn’t already been eating.” So, for anglers ready to get out there CatDaddy has some advice for better success than he had. He suggests anglers seek out locations where the feed isn’t as plentiful like on the main lake if you still can, as well as on the mouths of the creeks where it’s coming into the lakes. There is plenty of opportunity to be had, CatDaddy cautions that it’s just going to be a little tougher.
