Oregon Turkey Hunting Forecast for 2014
March 11, 2014
Like much of the Northwest, the primary Oregon turkey hunting areas have experienced a relatively mild winter snowfall in 2013 and it is likely that 2014 will be an excellent season, with high brood survival rates.
Before heading out to bag some spring gobblers, you'll want to know where to go, right? Two main areas to focus on in 2014 are the Roseburg area (Melrose Unit) and the White River Unit. According to harvest data, the Roseburg area is the top turkey hunting spot in Oregon with 391 turkeys taken by 907 hunters. Since the turkey prefer the oak found in the private lands here, biologists urge hunters to wait until later in the season and approaching these landowners for permission.
Because of an abundance of public land, the White River Unit is the most popular place to hunt gobblers. Looking at the numbers, you'll see that 1,512 hunters took 302 birds there last year. Biologists also suggest waiting until later in the season for hunting this area.
