Operation Top Kill: putting a plug in the BP well

photo by Petty Officer 3rd Class Ann Marie Gorden As clean up continues along Louisiana's coast, BP has moved forward with another plan to try and stop the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. They have moved away from their "tophat" solutions and instead of covering the hole they plan to plug the well. This new technique is called "Top Kill". Their plan is to fill the well with mud and cap it with cement. While the plan seems simple enough it is a difficult operation with the amount of pressure at this depth. They started filling the well with mud yesterday and although there were reports that the well has stopped gushing oil, which, unfortunately were untrue, it is still too early to tell what the results will be. Officials say it will take a few days to know if this newest idea will have the positive effect everyone is hoping for.
