New Online Boater Education Courses Availible
Iowans now have options when it comes to taking boater education courses. On Sept. 10, the Iowa Department of Natural Resource began offering three new online courses - all approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard.The courses are available from the Iowa DNR's website at //www.iowadnr.gov/law/boating/index.htmlThe new managed course is interactive with improved graphics and narration. The course is presented in a lesson format with in-depth information covering various topics in each chapter. Chapters are followed by review questions and discussion points for students.The online course consists of a complete educational curriculum covering the basics of boating safety, regulations and accepted best practices.Three different vendors will be offering courses. The fee for two vendors is $30 payable upon successfully passing the course. One vendor does not charge a fee because they received a grant to offset the cost of taking the online course.The Iowa DNR still offers the home study boater education course and Boat America classroom course taught throughout Iowa.Iowa has about 1,400 students annually who take the online boater education course, generally between April and August. In Iowa, all children 12 through 17 years old must successfully pass a boater education course to operate a boat or personal watercraft.The United States Power Squadron and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary also offer approved boater education courses.
