This week on The Revolution with Jim and Trav presented by Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network, we're taking an in-depth look at ‘Late Summer Fishing’. So as the fish come, strap on the ol' fall feedbag and take advantage of the available concentrations of baitfish, and now is the time to concentrate our efforts on filling our livewells. Joining us on this fishing expedition will be Joe Thomas of Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors with Joe Thomas and Ultimate Match Fishing, plus the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup Champion John Cox, Curtis Fleming from Fly Rod Chronicles, and wild man Fish Fishburne of Ultimate Match Fishing.

Joe Thomas is an experienced angler, former pro angler, producer, author as well as the host of Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors with Joe Thomas and Ultimate Match Fishing both on Outdoor Channel. This week Joe tackles the September transitional fishing period and likens it to the pre-rut for deer and says they occur around the same time. However, the good news for anglers is that many times you’ll have the lake to yourself and the fishing action can be fantastic. He recommends paying attention to the seasonal patterns and letting them influence your tactics. He says one thing that is consistent during the fall period is when the water temperature starts to drop the fish start to migrate shallower and begin to feed before winter. He highlights this behavior in reservoirs and says that this time of year the shad start to migrate into creeks and the bass follow them creating great fishing action, if you can find them. When fishing new bodies of water Joe explains how to break down a lake in order to find the most productive fishing spots. He’ll also talk about the ability to make subtle changes in your tactics based on weather and wind and how this is what separates an average angler from a great angler. Check out more from Joe Thomas and Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors with Joe Thomashere.

In August, professional angler, John Cox secured the title of 2016 Forrest Wood Cup Champion on Wheeler Lake in Alabama. John fishes out of an aluminum Crestliner boat and with that he has been dubbed by some as the “Tin Man”. John joins The Revolution this week to talk about his win and he discusses his choice to run an aluminum rather than glass boat. John also talks about custom building his own rods with supplies from Mud Hole. John says that the name of the game is customizing your baits to outperform the guy(s) you are competing against. By building his own rod he can also customize the rod for the bait and the technique he will be using. “Every time I go to build a rod, I end up learning something about it and take that forward to the next time I build another one.” Find out more about his $300,000 win and the gear he used to bring the title home.

Curtis Fleming is a skilled fly fisherman and the host of Fly Rod Chronicles on Outdoor Channel. Join The Revolution this week as Curtis hands out advice for the aspiring fly fishermen as well as seasoned pros. Curtis says fly fishing is a skill that anyone can master because it’s all about the timing, not about strength. “Some of the best fly fishermen in the world are women, because their timing is incredible.” Fly fishing requires finesse and the ability to read the water. In addition, Curtis says you need to know what the fish are eating and your presentation has to be perfect. September is a transitional month and right now fish are getting ready for winter and trying to put on weight. When it comes to flies Curtis hands out advice on three you should be using right now. In regards to equipment, fly fishing gear can cost you some serious cash. If you are just beginning Curtis recommends heading to a Cabela’s: “For beginners, get a starter kit. Just get used to that cast and making those perfect drifts, because once you hone your skills then you’ll find out what kind of rhythm and what kind of timing you have.” Once you master the basics then you can go back in, let the pros at Cabela’s see you cast and they’ll be able to help outfit you with the kind of rod you need. “We have fun with it and we show people out there, fly fishing can be fun.”

Fish Fishburne of Ultimate Match Fishing on Outdoor Channel joins Jim and Trav this week for an inside look at the popular series. Fish provides the color commentary for this competitive pro on pro tournament. Ultimate Match Fishing features eight of the top professional bass anglers in the world competing head-to-head in the same boat in a single elimination tournament for the UMF Title Belt. Fish will also dive into his own repertoire of fishing knowledge and hand out advice to the average angler. To begin with, Fish says the key to success is time and more specifically, time on the water. “The more time you spend, the better you’ll be,” says Fish. He acknowledges the challenges that working people face and how it is difficult to find the time, but says if you are serious about wanting to hone your skills you have to create the time to get out there and practice. Fish encourages anglers to work on perfecting just one technique at a time by getting on the water with only one rod and one reel. Eliminate excessive gear and you’ll be able to dial in and perfect your technique and watch your success rate climb. Tune in for more great fall fishing tips from Fish Fishburne.
