Join The Freshwater Fish Cooking Challenge

Use your favorite freshwater fish recipe and enter the Catch of the Day Cooking Challenge and Tasting Buffet.

The event will be held on Thursday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery and Visitor Education Center at Enid. It is jointly sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, the Mississippi State University Extension Service at Yalobusha County, and the Yalobusha County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Best Catfish, Catch of the Day (any local freshwater fish), and the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery Award. The NMFH Award is for any fish produced at the hatchery and includes walleye, carp, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, redear, and catfish. A Best Overall winner will be selected from the entries in all three categories. Entries must be received before 5:30 p.m.

Judges for the event are Dr. Paula Threadgill, leader of Family and Consumer Sciences for the Mississippi State University Extension Service, Dr. Bill Herndon, Director of the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center, and Dr. Jason Gordon, Assistant Extension Professor.

Along with a tasting of the dishes entered, guests will also enjoy a catfish dinner of world-renowned, Mississippi farm-raised catfish from Simmons Farm Raised Catfish in Yazoo City.

Guest speakers for the evening will be Clark Gordin, Executive Director of the Foundation for Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and award-winning wildlife photographer Joe Mac Hudspeth, Jr.

Entertainment will be provided by the ?Treblemakers,? a youth choir from the Palmer Home for Children in Columbus.

Guests may tour the Hatchery and Education Center prior to the dinner, tasting, and awards presentation.

Ticket price is $6 in advance or $7 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at the NMFH at Enid Lake, the Yalobusha County Extension Service office in Coffeeville, the North Mississippi Herald in Water Valley, the Panola County Extension office in Batesville, and the Tallahatchie County Extension office in Charleston.
