RUX 70L Photo courtesy of Rux When I first received the RUX 70L, I was admittedly skeptical. What could this $300 storage bin do that a $30 plastic tote could not? After a year of extensive use, I’ve found that the answer to that question is: “A lot.” For starters, the 70L is extremely well-built and made of materials that have withstood no shortage of abuse (I don’t think I own a plastic tote that isn’t cracked). It can be carried by its integrated handles or as a backpack with included shoulder straps. It’s fully waterproof. It’s got a handy windowpane to easily see what’s inside. It’s collapsible and packs away nicely when not in use. And, to top it all off, it comes with a lifetime warranty. The RUX 70L has become my go-to gear box for hunts and fishing trips, Boy Scout campouts with my son and outings at the shooting range. If you can swallow the steep price, it’ll almost certainly become a favorite of yours as well. Price: $298— John Taranto

White Duck Hoplite Canvas Duffel Photo courtesy of White Duck Outdoors As an avowed over-packer, I appreciate a duffel bag with a seemingly limitless capacity. When preparing for a trip, be it a week-long excursion or a weekend outing, I analyze every possible contingency, pack outfits for each and then throw in backups for each outfit. The Hoplite from White Duck, best known for their excellent canvas tents, has met my packing proclivities with aplomb. There’s nothing fancy about the Hoplite. It’s made of rugged, weatherproof yet lightweight canvas, has carry handles on both sides, and either end comes with a padded shoulder strap. But its materials and construction are excellent, given the price. The Hoplite is available in three sizes: standard (204 liters, 2.4 pounds), large (337 liters, 3 pounds) and extra-large (579 liters, 4.4 pounds). Price: $39–$55 —John Taranto

PACT Lite Bathroom Kit Photo courtesy of Pact Outdoors When it comes to pooping outdoors, there are two kinds of people. Those who dig a hole with the heel of their boot, do their business and then bury said business; and those who poop in a bag and carry it out with them. Of those two camps, I am firmly and unapologetically in the former. While the latter is perhaps more admirable, neither is ideal as far as I’m concerned. Enter PACT, a relatively new company committed to environmentally responsible open-air defecation. Their PACT Lite Bathroom Kit comes with an aluminum trowel for digging a hole, water-activated, biodegradable wipes, and mycelium tablets to break down the waste and kill bacteria. The wipes and mushroom tabs fit neatly inside the trowel handle. Price: $35 —John Taranto

The diamond plates feature 20-degree guides, while the strop has a 25-degree guide for attaining the perfect sharpening angle. CRKT Biwa Fixed Photo courtesy of CRKT If you ask me, so-called bird-and-trout knives are unfairly typecast. Sure, they’re great for fileting a rainbow or breasting out a grouse, but these handy, typically fixed-blade knives are capable of so much more if given the chance. Whatever your needs, the new full-tang Biwa Fixed from CRKT and designer Alan Folts is an able candidate. Featuring a 3-inch-long blade, it’s an incredibly nimble and lightweight (1.6 ounces) option for countless camp chores. Choose between 12C27 steel and Micarta handle scales or 8Cr13MoV steel paired with G10 scales. The 12C27/Micarta model comes with a stitched black leather sheath with belt loop; the other comes with a thermoplastic sheath and neck lanyard. Price: $48–$60 —John Taranto

First Lite Core Photo courtesy of First Lite The First Lite brand is perhaps best known as a western hunting apparel maker, but in recent years, they have made inroads in the whitetail market. For 2024, they’ve gone all-in with three whitetail-specific kits for early-, mid- and late-season hunting. I’ve been wearing the Core kit, designed for mid-season (20 to 45 degrees), and am impressed with not only how comfortable it keeps me on stand (thanks to just the right amount of PrimaLoft Gold insulation) but also how quiet it is. One particularly cool feature includes the pass-through magnetic pockets in the jacket that offer access to the bib’s muff pocket. Other nice touches include a removable hood, harness tether slit, loops inside the cuffs to attach a bow release and a contoured “archery collar” that stays out of the way when you’re at full draw. Price: $450/bib, $450/jacket, $300/vest —John Taranto
