Gun owners are well aware of the importance of securely storing their firearms. However, for some people, a full-size gun safe isn’t an option. Perhaps the safes in their price range aren’t big enough to meet their needs. Or maybe they don’t have the means to move an incredibly heavy safe to the location where they want it to be stored. Whatever the reason, sometimes a gun cabinet, typically lighter and less expensive than a safe, is the ideal solution, and one such option is the NewAge Gun Cabinet ($999.99; shopnewage.com).
There are several things that set this cabinet apart from others, including its high level of customizability and its multi-layer security. We’ll get to those in a moment, but first, let’s talk dimensions, specs and what’s included.
A hard-foam stock rest with cut-outs keeps guns from sliding around while protecting butt stocks. (Photo courtesy of NewAge Products) THE DETAILS The NewAge Gun Cabinet measures 36 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 80 inches high (up to 84 3/4 inches with the adjustable leveling legs fully extended). Given that the walls are single-layer steel, it offers far more internal space than a fireproof safe of similar dimensions.
It weighs a little more than 205 pounds (a fraction the weight of a similarly sized safe) and has a weight capacity of half a ton. In fact, each door can support 40 pounds of weight. The company lists the firearms capacity at 18 long guns and 6 handguns, though this will vary depending on how you arrange the cabinet, the sizes of the firearms you wish to stow and what other items you choose to keep under lock and key. There is plenty of room for ammo boxes, gun cleaning supplies, optics and other odds and ends.

12 short barrel rests 2 side barrel rests 1 36-in. 12-gun foam stock rest 1 36-in. 6-gun foam stock rest 2 pistol holders 2 parts bins with support bracket 1 36-in. stock shelf 1 36-in. pro series locker shelf ORGANIZATION AND SECURITY The back wall and the inside panels of the doors feature a series of holes and slots that accept the various accessories, allowing the user to create a truly customized set-up to meet his or her needs.
The cabinet is made of welded steel and features double-walled steel doors, a California DOJ-certified 3-point lock system and six hinges per door. Cut-outs on the rear panel allow for easy mounting to wall studs or masonry for added security.

The simple yet tasteful styling of the cabinet, including a powder-coated black-and-gray finish, makes it a discrete option that won’t draw undue attention or advertise that there are firearms within.
The cabinet has room for up to 18 rifles and shotguns. And unless you’re going to keep it in your garage, you’ll likely need to enlist help in moving it to where it where you want it (I plied my two strongest neighbors with beer to get it to my basement office). However, this cabinet offers users an incredible amount of customization, ample security and a non-descript yet good-looking gun-storage option that won’t break the bank.
