If it’s been a while since you considered a KastKing fishing reel, perhaps it’s time for a fresh look at the brand. Within the past five years, they’ve transformed from a low-budget internet retailer to a very innovative reel company, as evidenced by the new Mg-Ti Elite baitcaster .
One must begin with the reel's incredibly lightweight design. Weighing a mere five ounces, it’s one of the lightest reel frames on the market that isn’t designated as a BFS (bait finesse system) reel. Much of the feather-light design is derived from the innovative titanium spool, which contributes only 6.9 grams to the frame weight.

The spool’s ultra-thin wall means no baffles or holes are required to trim weight; therefore, nothing is sacrificed in terms of strength. In fact, KastKing further states that titanium offers two to three times more strength than aluminum alloys commonly used in most baitcasters.
Additionally, KastKing claims that the spool has zero startup inertia—not just minimal startup inertia, but zero. The result is effortless casting that sends lightweight topwater lures a mile while also handling half-ounce spinnerbaits with ease. What KastKing has done with the Mg-Ti Elite is blur the lines between a BFS reel and a traditional baitcaster.

Magnesium Frame The magnesium alloy frame also offers lightweight strength. The reel's very low-profile design melds deep into your hand when palming it. As mentioned, the overall weight of the reel without line is an astounding five ounces, which is two to three ounces lighter than most premium baitcasting reels.
The digi-cut frame provides tight tolerances at the seams of the frame’s various components, giving the reel a solid feel in your hand.
Braking System KastKing has utilized its Halo Vortex Braking System, a seamless ring of 12 magnets that self-adjusts during the cast to reduce braking force as the cast progresses. The result is minimal backlashes on long casts.

A large external dial on the palm plate makes brake adjustment quick and easy. However, because the dial is large and easy to adjust, I occasionally accidentally moved the dial as I palmed the reel throughout the day. This is a minor issue, but something to be aware of. A swing-away palm plate allows quick access to remove the spool when cleaning and oiling the reel.
Regardless of lightweight components, the KastKing Mg-Ti Elite effortlessly makes long, accurate casts. ("Tackle Junkie" screenshot) Performance I’ve been most impressed with the Mg-Ti Elite’s casting distance. It bombs casts with effortless power, regardless of the lure and lightweight components, making it a true pleasure to fish with all day. The all-black frame looks great and will pair well with your favorite fishing rod.
An 18-pound drag is more than enough for any bass fishing situation, and KastKing has incorporated a “clicker” drag that is handy when using lighter fluorocarbon lines.
The reel is available in a single 7.2:1 gear ratio for both left- and right-hand retrieves. However, I’d love to see it offered in more gear ratios to broaden its application range even further.
The MSRP is $299, which is reasonable for such a quality baitcasting reel.
As stated at the outset, if it’s been a while since you considered a KastKing reel, the new Mg-Ti Elite might very well make you a convert.
