It's the perfect image for social media:

A lake trout with what looks like a second mouth is pointed face-first at the camera, with the caption, “Check this #lakechamplain creature out.”

Whether it was caused by injury or mutation — there’s been plenty of discussion about that on social media — the lake trout caught by Debbie Geddes on Lake Champlain earlier this month indeed looked like it had two mouths.

The unusual catch was posted Monday by a co-worker on the Knotty Boys Fishing Facebook page, instantly becoming a viral photo. As of Thursday, the photo of Geddes’ fish was shared more than 7,000 times. It also had drawn more than 1,000 comments, with many posters discussing what may have caused the deformity in the otherwise healthy-looking fish.

”It’s just an old injury, not two-headed at all,” one poster said.

”Like the Simpsons with the sewage leak and the squirrel with a million eye balls,” another said.

Geddes was fishing with her husband when the fish struck.

”When we got it in the boat I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! Two mouths! And yet this fish was healthy and thriving! Pretty amazing!” Geddes told Fox News.

She released the fish after photos were taken.
