Temperatures are beginning to dip, and the change in weather can only mean one thing to the avid outdoorsman—hunting season is upon us. More importantly, deer season is right around the corner. Behavior patterns are beginning to shift, bucks are shedding their velvet, and hunters across the country are sitting on the edge of their seats awaiting the explosive action that only the rut and opening day can bring.

The Midwest region of the United States is notorious for producing record numbers of whitetail deer, with many trophy bucks earning their keep in the famed Boone & Crockett Club record book. As you are aware, different regions of the United States have their own unique terrain characteristics and hunting regulations. Hunters in each region naturally gravitate towards a selection of popular calibers each season, placing trust in their choice and its ability to fill their freezer. Read on as we take a closer look at six of the top choices for taking down whitetail this season.

In 2023, Remington Ammunition designed and launched a new whitetail cartridge, which they dubbed the .360 Buckhammer. While used by hunters coast to coast, this round catered specifically to "straight-wall" states. For those not familiar, there are states that enact regulations that limit hunters to using straight-walled cartridges during deer season instead of the more common bottleneck cartridges used elsewhere, as they tend to fly flat and have lower velocities than their counterparts. These restrictions were put into place due to the flatter terrain seen across much of the Midwest. This rimmed cartridge is a popular option in lever-action rifles and is preferred by many over hunting with a 12-gauge shotgun and slugs, undoubtedly rougher on both the shoulder and the wallet.

Sometimes you can’t beat a classic, which is probably why .30-06 has stood the test of time when it comes to whitetail mainstays. Because it has been around for quite some time, possibilities are seemingly endless when it comes to rifles chambered in this caliber. Ammunition capabilities are just as endless as well, with factory ammunition offering countless bullet types and weights, as well as a plethora of components available for those wishing to handload their own hunting rounds. The .30-06 boasts higher velocities than other options, while retaining a relatively flat trajectory. While effective for whitetail and similar-sized game, this cartridge has been proven effective on North America's largest game animals, such as elk, bear and more.

.243 Winchester

Another highly popular option for taking down whitetail season after season is the .243 Winchester. Hunters are fond of this round’s light recoil and pinpoint precision. Just like other calibers typically used during deer season, the .243 Winchester is flat shooting, which, when combined with minimal recoil, makes follow-up shots a breeze should your initial shot miss due to an untimely flinch or poor placement. Bullets in 90 to 100 grains seem to be the most popular options when targeting whitetail, while additional options are available should you wish to take your deer rifle out predator hunting during the off-season.

.30-30 Winchester

Another go-to amongst hunters each deer season is the .30-30 Winchester. This round, when paired with a lever-action rifle, proves to be quite the deadly combination. If you’re not hunting one of the corn or bean fields that make up much of the Midwest, chances are you are tucked into the wood line with a shooting lane that maxes out around 100 – 150 yards, give or take. No need to worry, as this is where .30-30 shines. Both the 150- and 170-grain bullet weights are among the most popular, with both filling tags year after year. Recoil tends to be mild, and given that it has been such a popular cartridge through the years, rifle manufacturers tend to offer options in this particular chambering for their consumer base.

If you are ever in the mood to start a debate amongst fellow range buddies, simply pose the following question: “If you could only shoot one caliber, what would it be and why?" Chances are, many will reply that they would choose .308 Winchester. When rifle manufacturers release a new gun, there is typically an option to purchase it chambered in .308 Win. Lastly, this cartridge features perhaps the greatest number of variations, whether it be for long-range shooting, general plinking or hunting an array of game. Recoil is manageable, and bullet weights and styles are plentiful, allowing you to match up what shoots best out of your particular rifle. Handloaders are able to mix and match compatible components to create highly accurate rounds, with performance nearing that of .30-06, but in a shorter action.

6.5 Creedmoor

Often considered the “new kid on the block,” 6.5 Creedmoor has earned its keep as a reliable whitetail cartridge. This highly accurate round is an excellent choice for those hunting open fields where typical shots fall much farther than those you’d expect to take with a .30-30 or .360 Buckhammer. Should the wind be whipping around when your target buck steps out of the wood line, don't fear, as 6.5 Creedmoor typically has a higher ballistic coefficient, beating the wind to land within the kill zone. Ammunition options continue to expand for this round, with its ever-growing popularity especially amongst those who handload their own ammunition. Energy retention is impressive, and essential as well-placed shots will drop deer in their tracks, saving you hours of tracking after an extended sit.

When it is all said and done, there is no single “perfect” caliber. In the end, it all boils down to what shoots most accurately out of your rifle and provides a clean, ethical kill. Whether you find yourself hunting wide open fields of corn and soybeans, densely wooded forests, or gentle rolling hills alongside a stream’s edge, it is up to you to choose what is best. Once you have chosen your gear and ammunition, ensure you practice during the off-season to keep those skills fresh and your freezer full come fall.
