With FFS (forward-facing sonar) and BFS (Bait Finesse System) techniques driving so much lure design, it’s natural for rod builders to gravitate toward accommodating these lighter finesse techniques. Lighter actions and somewhat longer lengths greatly assist in maximizing casting distance and taking up line quickly on a long hookset.
Of course, manufacturers aren’t abandoning anglers who still appreciate traditional “power fishing” techniques, with new rod designs always trending to even more lightweight with improved sensitivity. Some of these are at price points intended for the “enthusiast” class of anglers, while others try to hit the masses with more palatable prices of $200 or less.
Here’s a small sampling of the rods from this year’s ICAST show.
For those who like to travel with their fishing tackle in tow, Daiwa has released a series of travel rods that break down into an extremely compact package for easy fit into a suitcase or backpack. The Ardito Jitte Telescopic Travel rods have a twist-off handle that also houses the telescoping rod while in transit. Very innovative fold-down line guides make the travel rod extremely low profile for easy storage. MSRP $199.99.

One can’t mention premium bass rods without immediately recalling the G. Loomis name. The GLX series is a cornerstone as to why “Loomis” is a household name and they’ve upgraded some key components to make the series even lighter and more balanced. Upgraded Fuji K SiC line guides and a new Ci4+ reel seat reduce weight and heighten rod balance. Contoured premium cork handles add to the overall high-end feel of this legendary series. MSRP of the new GLX lineup starts at $525, depending upon rod length and action.
Great rods from ICAST 2024 (top to bottom): Daiwa Ardito Jitte Telescoping Travel Rod, St. Croix GXR, Lew’s LFS, Cashion Icon, G. Loomis GLX. Within the popular Icon Series, Cashion is adding The ICON BFS casting rod and a spinning rod for lightweight FFS lures called the Icon FFS. Lighter actions and somewhat longer rod lengths feel responsive, lightweight, and ideally suited to handle lures under 1/8 oz. Both the ICON BF and the ICON FFS retails at $234.95.
Lighter, faster, stronger is a recipe for success in athletes, as well as a new series of rods from Lew’s . The LFS series (Lighter, Faster, Stronger) is offered in a wide range of lengths and actions for any bass technique, whether using spinning or baitcasting gear. Premium cork handles are comfortable and feel great when holding. With a very comfortable MSRP of $139.00, these rods feel as though they could outperform their price point.

Many consumers like the convenience of a packaged rod and reel combination when perusing the tackle rack. The combination of St. Croix’s GXR rod and the accompanying Seviin baitcaster just won “Best of Show” for best baitcasting combo at ICAST 2024. St. Croix offers several rod lengths and actions available in both baitcasting and spinning in the GXR combo series. With an MSRP starting at $200, this combo will be a big hit for those searching for quality and convenience.
