Antlers & Venison
Featured Guests: Derrick Ratliff, Bruce Pettet, Mitch Petrie
There are many huntable game species, but none are more accessible and popular than deer. It’s estimated that 10 million deer hunters reside across the country and so this week on The Revolution with Jim and Trav, the boys will be joined by a panel of pros to hand out deer hunting advice. Tune in as they discuss huntable food and water sources, changing patterns, scouting techniques, DIY public land deer hunting, plus custom rifles, ammunition, optics and new outdoor programming. Our guests will include Derrick Ratliff, President and Founder of Horizon Firearms. Then President and CEO of Leupold & Stevens, Bruce Pettet, and Mitch Petrie, Vice President of Programming for Outdoor Sportsman Group. Jim and Trav’s “Antlers & Venison” discussion is presented by Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel, World Fishing Network and MyOutdoorTV.
Just a few weeks ago, we embarked on the custom rifle build journey with Horizon Firearms, and many of you have been following this process from the beginning. This week Derrick Ratliff with Horizon Firearms joins us with a look at the completed product. The 6.5 Creedmoor is an ever increasingly popular caliber choice and Derrick has talked about the strong suits and advantages that it offers to hunters and shooters when he has joined us previously. So, tune in as Derrick talks about this caliber selection and highlights the custom design features like the paint job, theme appropriate bolt knob, barrel design and more. The rifle sports an American proud theme with a custom painted stock that has a weathered and worn Old Glory ghosted in with “Deplorables” written in script. The barrel is squared and features a series of stars, in contrasting color, to tie in with the theme. From stock to barrel, this rifle is awesome!
Derrick is also an avid hunter and has spent more than a decade hunting the south Texas brush country which is challenging terrain. Texas is known for its deer hunting and there are plenty of Lone Star State giants out there like the 185”, 230-pound whitetail that Derrick tagged a couple years back. He says that the animals that call south Texas home are tough as they live in incredibly hot conditions and somehow find a way to survive and thrive off limited vegetation. He’ll talk about the 28 Nosler he used to take this buck and give us a closer look at this caliber. Sitting somewhere between the 7mm Mag and 7mm Ultra Mag, Derrick says the 28 Nosler is an incredibly fast 7mm and legitimate long-distance gun favored by many. The .30-06 is perhaps the most iconic and popular all-purpose caliber and has been for decades, but looking forward, is there a new caliber poised to take that lead? Tune in to find out and to learn more about our new custom rifle designed and built by Horizon Firearms.
One-hundred and eleven years, five generations of family owned, over seven-hundred hard working American employees, and a legacy of a Gold Ring Guarantee – Leupold & Stevens is as intrinsic to the outdoorsman or woman, as conservation is to wildlife. Since 2014, Bruce Pettet has been ardently at the helm of Leupold & Stevens serving as the President and CEO. He joins Jim and I on this week's broadcast of The Revolution to discuss the luminous history of the family behind the Leupold brand, an American manufacturing commitment, and how Marcus Leupold was a visionary, an entrepreneur that forged the world's greatest optics out of a hunting failure in the early 40’s.
Bruce will touch on Leupold’s renowned glass and the eighty-five engineers that work on Leupold products every day and highlight their low light performance achieved through Twilight Max coatings. We all know as hunters that the first fifteen minutes of daybreak and the last fifteen minutes of shooting light, is when it really counts. And while their competitors bank on everything looking clear in the middle of the day in a retail store, Leupold assures that their binoculars, rangefinders, scopes and spotting scopes, will perform outside, in the real world, on the worst days, no matter what. Bruce will also hand out some of his top picks for rifle scopes and binoculars and highlight features that make these different models ideal for different hunting situations. Be sure to listen to this fun and informative two-part interview with Bruce Pettet, President and CEO of Leupold & Stevens.
Mitch Petrie is the VP of Programming for Outdoor Sportsman Group – Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network. He joins The Revolution this week to talk programming, the future of outdoor programming, MyOutdoorTV, reversing dwindling hunter participation numbers and so much more!
Outdoor Sportsman Group is at the forefront of outdoor programming with an impressive roster of hunting, fishing, shooting and outdoor themed television shows. New advancements in technology means people are changing the way they consume content every day and Mitch says that as a company, Outdoor Sportsman Group is invested in and committed to evolving and developing technology to provide the best content possible through a variety of different platforms. Aside from traditional television viewership, Mitch highlights MyOutdoorTV and its growing presence on platforms like ROKU, Amazon, DIRECTV, Sling and more which makes outdoor programming more readily accessible from your computer, phone, tablets and devices. Because of the huge amount of content put out on a daily basis, Mitch says it’s impossible for a person to be able to watch everything, so the MyOutdoorTV app provides an excellent way to go back and watch all of your favorite shows or search out the things that interest you the most.
The programming on Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network is rooted in the hardcore hunt, shoot, fish kind of shows that people expect. Mitch says that producers and independent producers work hard and are motivated to provide this kind of great content. However, Mitch says they also look for programming that is unique and different like Wicked Tuna and Wild Boar Fever. Hunting in Europe looks different than it does in the United States and driven boar hunts like those on Wild Boar Fever have really piqued the interest of Americans. Mitch says initially he was a bit skeptical about how well Wild Boar Fever would be received here in the U.S., but ultimately says the culture, history, reverence for the animal and experience of the hunt are all themes that are interesting for American viewers. Mitch will also highlight Deer Week on Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel which kicks off on September 17th. Deer Week is exactly what it sounds like, 7 days of round-the-clock deer hunting programming. Hosting this year’s event will be Lee & Tiffany Lakosky, well known and respected hosts of Crush with Lee & Tiffany on Outdoor Channel. Mitch says there will be a lot of interesting deer-oriented content but also encourages everyone to check out www.DeerWeek.com for access to an extensive amount of hunting tips, gear suggestions, recipes and more.
Finally, Mitch will highlight the decline in hunter participation, the affect that it has, and will continue to have, on conservation and Outdoor Sportsman Group’s commitment to conservation and hunter recruitment. Be sure to take a listen as Mitch Petrie, VP of Programming at Outdoor Sportsman Group joins us for a look at new programming, the evolution of outdoor television and getting more people into the great outdoors!
