Wow! Missouri Brown Trout Record Shattered Again

The monster fish was less than 2 pounds shy of world-record weight.

In less than seven months, the brown trout record in Missouri has broken twice and more than 11 pounds has been added to record weight.

That was after the record had stood for almost 10 years. Both times, the new record came out of Lake Taneycomo.

The latest record was caught this week, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation in a new release, with the Sept. 4 catch of a whopping 40-pound, 6-ounce brown trout by Blue Eye, Mo, resident Bill Babler.

The previous record caught Feb. 23 by Paul Crews of Neosho, also out of Taneycomo, weighed 34-10.

Before Crews’ catch, Scott Sandusky’s 28-12 brown trout had stood as the state record since November of 2009.

Babler said he used a pink Berkley PowerBait in shallow water near the mouth of Fall Creek and it only took a few minutes to land the fish, he told the Springfield News Leader.

It’s a world-class catch by any comparison. The world record recognized by the International Game Fish Association (caught in 2013 in New Zealand) is less than 2 pounds heavier at 42-1.

MDC said Babler attempted to keep fish alive in an aerated tank to be released, but it died. MDC staff verified the weight on a certified scale in Branson.

Lake Taneycomb, located near Branson, also owns one of the state-record rainbow trout, according to the MDC — a 15-6 rainbow caught by alternative method in 1971 (the pole-and-line record rainbow is 18-1).
