There are a wide variety of options for spring fishing in Delaware. The First State is known for its world-class black sea bass angling as well as freshwater fishing for bass, trout and other popular inland species.
For March bass fishing, Delaware’s famed Nanticoke River system has everything the recreational and tournament-class angler desires. Open year-round and boasting largemouths in the 6- to 8-pound class, the Nanticoke offers great fishing in the main river as well as in its many tributaries. Drift along sure using purple jigs or Carolina-rigged rubber worms, or ply the immediate shoreline using spinnerbaits and soft crankbaits.
New Castle County
Delaware trout fishing is put-and-take angling at its best. Several streams in New Castle County are stocked with “meant to be caught” rainbows including White Clay, Mill, Pike and Christina Creeks as well as Beaver Run and Wilson Run. There is no size limit on trout and the daily bag limit is six fish. Some restrictions apply so consult current trout-fishing regulations.
Delaware’s famed black sea bass is the target of choice when the season opens this month. The daily bag limit is 20 fish over 12.5 inches. Use sand fleas and green crabs fished off jetties, rocks and other structure. Expect to lose some terminal tackle and come prepared with spikes to aid in negotiating slippery rocks. A saltwater fishing license is required.
