Broadheads For 2010
Bill Winke looks at some of the new offerings for 2010

Carbon Express Mayhem EXT
The Mayhem is a member of a popular category of fixed-blade broadheads that have small, compact blades and short, squat ferrules. These heads reduce wind-planing with their limited blade surface. This three-blade head is made of 100 percent steel, weighs 100 grains and has a 1-inch cutting diameter. (800) 241-4833, www.carbonexpressarrows.com.

TruFire T1
The T1 is a three-blade head that comes in either 100- or 125-grain sizes. It features a cut-to-the-tip design with a true replaceable blade design. The ferrule is a solid piece of steel for a very rugged design. This is a great looking head that promises great penetration. It has a 1 1/8-inch cutting diameter. (920) 923-6866, www.trufire.com.

RAGE 2 and 3 Blade Broadheads
On impact, the blades of the Rage sweep forward from their stowed in-flight position. By the time the blades encounter the animal's hide, they are fully deployed to create a large entry hole. The 2 Blade version opens to 2 inches on impact. It has .035-inch thick primary blades and a small cutting blade at the tip. The 3 Blade version opens to 1 1/2 inches and has .030-inch thick blades. Both weigh 100 grains. Rage also makes a mechanical head for low draw-weight, low kinetic-energy bows called the 40KE. (888) 779-0092, www.ragebroadheads.com.

Crimson Talon Hyper-Speed XT
Crimson Talon designed the XT with blades that are curved (called Air Foil technology by Crimson Talon) to help spin the head in the same direction as the fletching. The head also keeps turning on impact making a spiral wound channel. Recently, Crimson Talon came out with the Hyper-Speed XT for super-fast bows. It has a short ferrule and compact blades to minimize wind-planing. It weighs 100 grains and has a cutting diameter of 1 1/4 inches. (410) 658-9660, www.spintite.com.

Muzzy Phantom MX
The new MX 2-Blade is a cut-to-the-tip broadhead with a 1 1/8-inch wide blade without the secondary bleeder blades you will find in the MX 4. The main blade is a stout .040-inch thick. I see the MX 2 as being the perfect head for those looking for maximum penetration. Our 9-year-old son used one last season to shoot his first buck with a bow. I selected it for maximum penetration, and it delivered. The MX 2 weighs 85 grains. (770)-387-9300, www.muzzy.com.

New Archery Products Edge Broadheads
NAP took two of their most popular heads of all time, the Thunderhead and the Spitfire, and gave them serrated blades. According to the company, the serrated blades increase penetration through hide, muscle and bone. These heads have retained all their other popular features, except for one. The Spitfire Edge has a 1 3/4-inch cutting diameter while the original was 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches depending on grain weight. (800) 323-1279, www.newarchery.com.

Grim Reaper Razortip
The Razortip is a mechanical head with a string-loaded locking collar that holds the blades snuggly in the stowed position until impact. This three-blade head doesn't require rubber bands to stay closed in flight. It comes in a wide range of sizes: 75, 85, 100 and 125 grains with cutting diameters of 1 1/8 up to 1 3/4 inches. The larger size is an option for 100- and 125-grain sizes. (801) 377-6199, www.grimreaperbroadheads.com.
