Game & Fish Editor-in-Chief John Geiger and Regional/Firearms Editor Paul Rackley spent the week of Jan. 23 at SHOT Show 2018, which showcased the newest and best hunting and shooting products.
Here are some of the best hunting rifles and shot guns that caught their attention.
With superior feel and performance, the Italian gunmaker’s first bolt-action is a standout in the deer hunting market. About the Momentum, Franchi says, “In a crowded bolt-action market, no brand has built a rifle purely off ergonomics, fit and feel. Until now. The new Franchi Momentum bolt-action rifle is designed to be an extension of the body, regardless of shooting position.” The many features include an ergonomically friendly rigid polymer stock, adjustable trigger, hinged floor plate magazine, TSA recoil pad. Available in .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, and .300 Win. Mag.
Mauser calls the new M18 “The People’s Rife.” The renown German gunmaker has produced an affordable high-quality bolt action, perfect for deer hunters, that is packed with features. The M18 has a cold-hammered steel barrel (56 cm for standard caliber / 62 cm for magnum), 5+1 magazine capacity, synthetic stock and soft grip inlays on the pistol grip and fore-end. Currently available in .308 and 30.06 calibers. Available in July will be: standard — .243 Win., .270 Win.; magnum — 7 mm Rem., .300 Win.
Savage Arms introduced the new MSR 15 Valkyrie just before the year’s end, built to accommodate Federal Premium’s new 224 Valkyrie cartridge. The new rifle “delivers supersonic velocities [up to] 1,300 yards, extremely flat trajectories and match accuracy. Plus it produces only half the recoil of larger cartridges needed to achieve comparable trajectories,” according to the company. The Valkyrie has an 18-inch barrel, with 5R rifling and a two-stage trigger. The 224 cartridge, is said to offer the “best ballistics of any MSR 15 caliber,” the company said.
A rifle that properly fits the shooter is more comfortable to shoot, thus making it easier to maintain proper form. That’s ultimately what was behind Savage’s re-introduced Model 110 with a revolutionary new stock system called the AccuFit. Available in numerous variations and calibers — including left-hand models — the Model 110 with AccuFit comes with four buttstock inserts and five comb risers for customizing the fit of the rifle to pretty much anyone’s needs, regardless of size. Each comb insert increases height by 1/8 inch for a range up to 5/8 inches, while the buttstock inserts increase in 1/4-inch increments to change the length of pull by one full inch, with different screws for each that are changed via a Philips head screwdriver. The new rifle is available in 11 different chambering options (from .223 Rem up to 300 Win Mag).
Based on the popular and proven Buck Mark Pistol, the unique Browning Buck Mark Rifle rimfire offers everything you need: dialed-in ergonomics, fast handling and modern styling, plus outstanding accuracy, dependable blowback operation, crisp single-action trigger pull and magazines that are interchangeable throughout the Buck Mark line. The lightweight, compact design comes to the shoulder fast and onto a target even faster. On the range, you’ll appreciate the easy-to-load magazine, reliability and superb accuracy.
Benelli says it produces more left-hand shotguns than any other firearms manufacturer. Left-hand shotguns are offered in all of Benelli’s flagship models, including the SBEII, Montefeltro, and the M2 in 12- and 20-gauge versions. Left-handed shooters no longer have to put up with hulls ejecting across their faces. The 12-gauge Super Black Eagle 2 is a good choice for bird hunters, who’ll find a durable firearm for all kinds of conditions — field loads for doves up to magnum shells for geese. Benelli calls it the “lightest, fastest and softest-kicking shot gun ever made.”
The Remington 870 DM features a detachable magazine system, 6-round 12-gauge magazine, bead sight, black synthetic stock, corn Cobb fore-end, Supercell recoil pad, 18 1/2-inch cylinder bore barrel. Remington says the 870DM has the “fastest response time of any pump shot gun in history.”
Mossberg’s new 590M Series offers magazine-fed convenience in the legendary Mossberg pump-action tactical platform. Mossberg says the “world’s first production double-stack 12GA shotgun magazine offers a shorter magazine length vs. capacity than competitor’s single-stack designs, providing better swing, balance and control.” Magazines are available in 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-shot capacities. Has all the features you expect from Mossberg: Dual extractors, twin-action bars, positive steel-to-steel lockup, drilled and tapped receiver, ambidextrous safety, and heavy-walled barrel.
