Man Accused of Stealing Fishing Gear from 2 Walmarts

by Scott Bernarde   |  March 8th, 2017 0

Ohio authorities have accused a man of stealing nearly $4,000 in fishing gear from two Walmarts by blatantly trying to walk out of the stores with the loot.

Derrick Edward Marcum of Hamilton, Ohio, was first arrested in October when he tried to leave a Walmart in nearby Forest Park, with two backpacks full of lures and gear, according to WLWT-TV in Cincinnati.

Total value: $1,300.

That, apparently, wasn’t Marcum’s only fishing-gear theft, authorities said.

During the investigation, police discovered Marcum hit another Walmart store — in Lebanon, Ohio — the day before the Forest Park heist.

They say he filled five fishing storage containers with lures and gear, went through a self-checkout lane and scanned and paid for only the containers.

Total value: $2,500.

He “pretty much cleared out the aisle,” Warren County prosecutor David Fornshell said, according to media reports.

Marcum was indicted for the Lebanon offense on Feb. 27, according to the grand jury report, available on the county government website.

Marcum was in custody  in the Warren County jail, as of Wednesday, March 8, according to the jail’s inmate listings.
