Yamaha’s all-new Wolverine X4 is designed for versatility, comfort and leading off-road capability in the 4-seater recreational side-by-side class. That’s what the company told a group of outdoors and ATV writers gathered at a recent Atlanta-area unveiling of the new rig.
The Wolverine X4 side-by-side boasts several features that will be of interest to hunters and other outdoors enthusiasts, including a highly configurable cargo and seating arrangement that is adjustable to accommodate the maximum number of passengers, gear or a combination of both. The X4 also is intended to excel on tight trails.
A shared rear seating and cargo box arrangement allows the full-sized rear seats to be deployed or folded and slid away independent of one another, depending on whether stowing gear or carrying hunting or fishing buddies is the primary objective.
This set-up adds a lot of versatility to the vehicle and keeps its profile compact.
Those nimble proportions are intended to be an asset while negotiating challenging off-road routes. Skid plates help fend off obstacles that can’t be avoided.
The X4 is motivated by an all-new 847-cc DOHC parallel twin long-stroke powerplant in a mid-engine arrangement.
It is paired with a new version of the Ultramatic CVT transmission. The powertrain is intended to provide smooth power application and plenty of low-end grunt for tackling tough terrain.
Horsepower figures were not yet available as of this writing. Towing capacity is rated at about 2,000 pounds, while the cargo box can carry 600 pounds.
Yamaha reported that noise control and comfort are a key component of the new vehicle and that a beefy muffler and additional sound-dampening measures help accomplish those goals.
The EPS power steering system turns 26-inch tires in a radius of about 177 inches. The fully-independent suspension travels 8.7 inches in front and 8.9 in the rear. Four-wheel engine braking helps the X4 remain sure-footed during steep descents.
A wide range of accessories will be offered for the X4, and it will be available in Realtree Xtra.
Well-equipped models have an MSRP of around $17,200.
