5 Reasons You Should Consider a GoSun Solar Oven

If you're an angler and have ever thought about buying a solar cooker, the GoSun Sport is the one you should get and here's why

5 Reasons You Should Consider a GoSun Solar Oven

Ever had a serious craving for nachos while fishing on a boat? Of course, you have. Nachos are delicious. Plus, if you have nachos, you can use any leftover nacho cheese for catfish bait! It's a win-win!

Well, no longer do you need to dream about warm, cheesy tortilla chips when you're out fishing. Thanks to the GoSun Sport with Marine Clamp, a portable solar oven with a boat attachment, you can cook nachos (or whatever else you crave) on a boat.

The best part about the GoSun Sport is that it actually works! The weather doesn't have to be perfect for it to work either. As long as there is some sun, you can cook a meal even when it is cold, overcast or windy outside.

I must admit, I was both skeptical and intrigued by the idea of solar power cooking at first. But after trying out the GoSun Sport for myself, I am completely sold on it. If you've never thought about using a solar cooker, here are five reasons you should consider giving the GoSun Sport a go.

1. It's a killer conversation starter.

That's right, this solar cooker might just help you make new friends. From Bluetooth speakers to solar scanning tools, everyone loves new high-tech gadgets. Anglers (and non-anglers) can't help but be curious about this cool contraption. It's fun to explain what it is and how it works.

"What the heck is that?!" is the initial reaction I receive when pulling out my solar oven. The GoSun Sport is a unique looking oven for sure. With its aluminum reflectors (they look like metal wings), stainless-steel legs and solar cooking tube, the oven might resemble something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie. But this shiny device is made for clean cooking.

People are fascinated when I tell them the GoSun Sport is fuel-free and powered by nothing but the sun. So, how does it work? Physics. The reflectors on the sides of the stove accumulate sunlight. From there, the light travels through the tube's insulator and the heat is then absorbed into the cooking tube.

2. It's seaworthy! The oven attaches to your boat.

One of my favorite features on the GoSun Sport with Marine Clamp is the pre-installed boat clamp attachment. I love that it is already attached to the oven and no assembly is required.

With the marine clamp, you can conveniently attach the solar oven to a boat, an RV, or anything else that is 1/8 to 3 inches in diameter. The clamp is tightened by turning the ratchet handle clockwise and loosened by turning it counter-clockwise.

I mounted my oven on a few different boats and it worked great each time! I was a bit worried the clamp might scuff up the boat railing the first time I used it, but it has yet to cause any damage.

For those times you aren't on a boat, the solar oven can also be set up on a table top. Fold the legs down and clip them together for the stand, then set the oven on a surface such as a picnic table. The marine clamp does not need to be detached to do this, it will sit in between the legs.

3. It's a portable oven; meaning you can cook food almost anywhere with it!

Carrying the GoSun Sport to and from your boat is easier than opening a can of worms! The entire cooker folds up for easy carry and storage. It's stainless-steel legs also double as handles when folded up. Anything that's multipurpose gets a thumbs up from me.

The stove is surprisingly light for its size. With the attached marine clamp, it weighs only 9.5 pounds. I'm usually dragging fishing gear and a large cooler full of drinks to the boat already, so I definitely appreciate how lightweight and portable the GoSun Sport is.

The GoSun carrying case accessory features a padded shoulder strap for comfort and will help protect your stove against dings and scratches. (Jessyca Sortillon photo)

If you plan to do a lot of traveling with the stove, I recommend purchasing the carrying case accessory (sold separately) for greater portability. The carrying case is not only large enough to store the oven, but also any other items you may need to prepare a meal. I keep my seasonings, utensils and the included scrubby tool (for cleaning) inside the inner pockets.

Did I mention the GoSun Sport is FAA/TSA compliant? That's right, this solar cooker is ready to travel as a carry-on. Take it in the carrying case with you on the plane to your next fishing adventure in Costa Rica!

4. The oven only requires sunlight to cook up a hot meal.

Okay, so you do need to add a few recipe ingredients in there too, but other than that, it only needs sunlight. If there is sunlight, you can bake, roast or steam a tasty meal for two with the GoSun Sport. No charcoal. No gas. No wood. Just sun.

I cooked some crappie fillets with seasoned potatoes in the solar oven when it was slightly overcast outside. The meal took a little longer to cook than if it were sunny, but the fish and potatoes still baked up nicely and had wonderful flavor.

The GoSun Sport was a real lifesaver on my recent camping trip to a Colorado State Park. Due to dry and warm weather conditions, there were fire restrictions and fire bans in effect. Campfires and charcoal-fueled fires were prohibited. Luckily, I had my solar cooker and wasn't limited to sandwiches and chips for the entire camping trip.

5. It can cook just about anything: fish, veggies and more.

With the GoSun Sport and its boat attachment, you can bake cinnamon rolls for breakfast, roast chicken wings for lunch, and steam fresh fish and vegetables for dinner – all while out on the water.

Cooking your favorite foods is quick and easy with the solar cooker too. Simply load it up with food, aim the stove towards the sun, and enjoy some good ol' fishing while it cooks for you. In full sun, meals finish cooking in as little as 20 minutes (nachos in 10).

There really is no limit to what you can make in the solar oven. If you happen to need more recipe ideas, try one from the GoSun website or Cook Booklet included with the stove.
