Possible World Record White Sturgeon Caught in British Columbia

An English couple on holiday went home with one heck of a fish story.

Michael and Margaret Snell, a retired couple from Salisbury, England, reeled in a 12-foot, 4-inch white sturgeon weighing 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds) with a 53-inch girth while fishing near Chilliwak, B.C.

Billed by guides as "one of the biggest fish ever caught in North America," the monster catch could possibly be a world record. According to the International Game Fish Association, the world record white sturgeon was a 468-pounder caught by Joey Pallotta III on July 9, 1983, in Benicia, Calif. The Snells' catch would almost triple that record.

It certainly beats the five-foot sturgeon the Snells caught in June 2009.

"It's the most excitement I've ever had with a fish," Michael told the Vancouver Sun. "When we picked her head out of the water, it was almost three feet wide. I never knew a fish could be that large."
