Youth Fishing Event Set For Urban Los Angeles Lake

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will host a free youth fishing and education event at MacArthur Lake in Los Angeles on Saturday, Jan. 29. DFG Director John McCamman will attend.

?This is the 18th year our department has provided urban youth with access to fishing through the Fishing in the City Program,? said McCamman. ?I?m proud to be part of giving these children the opportunity to fish close to home, even without access to traditional fishing holes.?

DFG?s Fishing in the City Program will begin registering children ages 5 through 15 at 8 a.m. Only participating kids will be allowed to fish from 9 a.m. to noon. A limited number of fishing poles and other equipment will be available for loan at no charge. Volunteers will provide instruction and assistance to participating youth.

?We are very pleased to be working with the City of Los Angeles and the Parks Department to stock the lake with trout and catfish this year,? said McCamman. ?Having the opportunity to go fishing in the middle of the city gives these kids an appreciation for fishing and wildlife.?

The lake will be stocked with trout from DFG?s Fillmore Hatchery prior to the event. This is the first time in more than 20 years that MacArthur Lake has been stocked with fish, and marks the start of a regular stocking schedule for the lake during the 2011 trout and channel catfish seasons. Trout stocking will continue into April, and resume in November. Channel catfish will be stocked from May through November.

Although only those under age 15 may fish during the morning event, MacArthur Lake will be open for public fishing after noon on Saturday. A California fishing license is required for all anglers over age 16.

Established in 1993, the Fishing in the City Program serves Californians living in the Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles metropolitan areas.

Co-sponsors of this event include the City of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department and the Dan Hernandez Youth Foundation.
