Tips for Protecting Your Used ATV

The very first thing you should do when bringing home a used ATV, (even before you ride it), is change all the fluids. This applies to purchasing a new ATV or UTV as well.

  • Change the Oil and Filter

An oil change is the first thing you need to do with a used ATV. Make sure you're using the oil weight recommended by the manufacturer and don't overfill.
  • Clean and Oil the Air Filter

Clean and oil your air filter regularly. A thick layer of good all-purpose grease around the base where it connects with your machine works well at preventing dirt from slipping into your engine.

  • Drain the Fluids and Check for Metal Shavings

Metal shavings in your oil or other fluids can be a sign of a much bigger problem caused by wear and other damage. In addition to checking for metal shavings, you should flush your fluids and replace as soon as possible. Flushing your cooling system and replacing with new coolant is easy maintenance. If your old coolant smells burnt, that is a good indication that your engine is running hot.
