The Santa Broadbill - Twas the Night Before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas, when all along the shore The boats where lined up, to go fishing for sure. The rods were hung in the launchers with care,in hopes that a lunker soon would be there.
The lines were all out being trolled in their spreads, colorful skirts and baits with hooks in their heads.Captain at the helm, and mate in the tower,Had just set to sea with our engine's raw power. When out off the stern there rose such a clatter,I sprang from the chair to see what was the matter.Away to the rail i flew like a flash,Looked over the surface and heard a big splash. The moon on the swell looked like new fallen snowGave a luster of mid-day to the fish below. When what to our wandering eyes should appear, but a fish with a red hat and bill like a spear. With a seasoned captain, so quick on his feet,He called on the radio the rest of the fleet.More rapid than makos his courses they came,As he hailed and shouted and called them by name! Now Slasher! Now Reef Runner! Now Catcher and Reel Bros!On Rocket! On Crusader! On Hunter and Fishbones! To the top of the canyon! to the top of the Wall! Now sail away! Sail Away! Sail away all!As line pealed from the reel our catch in full flight,he tailwalked and jumped and continued to fight. So up the gulfstream the coursers he flew, with our boat in full chase by captain and crew.We gained back our line as we closed on the prize,it was a broadbill of incredible size.As we drew in our heads we can not be rash,To the sky he jumped and came down with a splash. He was tangled with rigs and floats lighting the night,His body was covered, wow were they bright. From his back he even pulled a hydroglow, and we all knew, he had to be let go.The lights how they twinkled! his eye were so bright!this incredible creature was a great sight! The big bill and mouth were drawn up like a bow,and the water around him was glistening like snow. The stump of a gaff, he held tight in his teeth, the electralumes encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broads bill and a big round belly, that shook when he jumped, like fish made like jelly. He was chubby and plump, a perfect fish, the answer to every angler's wish.A flip of his tail and twist of his head, soon we all knew that no more need be said.We spoke not a word, but went straight to our work, clearing the lines and rigs, he gave not a jerk. And being revived while under tow, giving a nod he was ready to go.He dove to the sea, and jumped to the clouds, away he did swim, to return to the mounds. But he left a message, 'ere he dove out of sight,Happy Fishing to all and to all a Good Fight!Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Years to All !!!Tight Lines and Screaming Drags !!!Stay Salty My Friends!!!(Adapted from the original Clement Clarke Moore's Twas the night before Christmas)
