South Carolina Division Prepares For Lake Wylie
The South Carolina Division 9 of the Toyota Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, will hold its third tournament of the season May 11, 2013, on Lake Wylie.
The competitors will launch at Buster Boyd’s Landing, located at 222 Blucher Circle in Lake Wylie, S.C. Anglers may begin fishing at 6:15 a.m. or safe light. The weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Registration begins at 4 p.m. at Buster Boyd’s Landing next to T-Bones.
Competitors fishing the Boater Division may weigh in up to five bass, each at least 14 inches long. Co-anglers may weigh in up to three bass. For South Carolina fishing license information, call 866-714-3611 or see www.dnr.sc.gov.
Lake Wylie straddles the North Carolina-South Carolina border near Charlotte, N.C. It spreads across 13,443 acres along the Catawba River and offers anglers about 325 miles of shoreline. The oldest lake in the Catawba River chain, the impoundment dates to 1904. It stretches from the Mountain Island Dam in North Carolina to the Wylie Dam at the southern end of the lake in South Carolina.
With the lake near full pool, anglers should find good fishing. Many anglers may look for spawning fish in the shallow flats. Competitors might also find some fish in post-spawn. Fish weightless soft plastics near the banks or drop wacky worms next to cover. Anglers may also catch bass on jigs under docks. If a shad spawn occurs, competitors might find some schooling fish. Tempt schoolers with lipless crankbaits, spinnerbaits, Alabama rigs or swimbaits.
During an American Couples Series tournament on Lake Wylie on March 23, 2013, John and Angela Mayo won with five bass weighing 12.48 pounds. John capped his catch with a 3.41-pounder that took big fish honors.
