I had the recent privilege of trying out a pair of lace up water shoes from SoftScience. Since it is still a tad chilly here in Michigan, I did not get an opportunity to try these shoes out near water yet, but I did give them a good test drive around town and at work.
The Fin is a shoe designed for kayakers, boaters and beach walkers. These self-draining shoes are very roomy and comfortable and the self-draining allows your feet to dry fast. When I first put these on and began walking in them, I was very impressed with the cushioned sole. It really did feel like walking on air. This great feeling is due to a proprietary material called Trileon that is designed for SoftScience only. As stated on the website: “a closed cell copolymer developed by Scott Seamans exclusively for SoftScience.”
Another thing that allows these shoes to be so darn comfortable is they’re light weight. The pair weighs only 10 ounces and makes you feel as though you have no weight on your legs – which in my case helps the old knees.
The insole is also removable, washable and made of Trileon. This allows the shoes to dry nicely. I did get them wet and the material and insole really take no time at all to air dry, which will be a good thing come warmer weather. I plan to wear these while on my kayak in the spring and summer.

I wore these shoes on a recent trip to Nashville, Tennessee. I walked downtown in them all day, going from place to place. The shoes gripped well to my feet. My feet were not fatigued at the end of the day, and both my knees and feet were not sore the next morning. I will say that I did experience some discomfort on the top of my feet where they were tied, but was able to relieve this by loosening the laces slightly.
Here is a list of the features of these shoes:
- Sturdy lace-up fishing shoe
- Lightweight, superbly cushioned and stable
- Woven, breathable microfiber upper
- Forefoot water flow system
- Universal Comfort Platform – roomy, relaxed fit
- Removable, washable Trileon insole
- Trileon non-marking, slip-resistant outsole
- Free Shipping
The leather laces were okay and did loosen after some wear, but I feel this is just part of breaking in the laces. When I got back from my trip, I wore these at work for a day and they seemed to stay tied longer.

The shoes are available in whole sizes and come in sage green, khaki, light gray, brown, dark blue and black. A wide fit and generous length are also mentioned on their website. The wide footprint seems like it will be great on the beach, plus the tread is designed for wet surfaces.
Overall, I have found these shoes very comfortable and the design leads me to believe that these are going to be great kayaking and beach shoes. I look forward to wearing these a lot more.
