Post spawn technique used during the Santee Cooper EverStart Event.
After the spawn big females will move out to the first drop away from the spawning flats to rest. And soon after the feeding will began. During the event on Santee Cooper, I found an area next to a spawning flat that was 8 feet deep with ell grass growing and topping out. There were open pockets and a ditch running through it. After experimenting with punch baits, floating worms, and hollow frogs, I choose a buzz frog by Garneau Baits. This frog allowed me to draw 3,4, and 5 pound bass out of the thick mats with buzzing surface noise without getting snagged. These big fish were sluggish speed retrieve was key. Tackle used, Abu Garcia 7"6 med. heavy Villain rod 6:4:1 Revo STX reel, lined with 20 lb Berkley Big Game. With this technique on day two I was able to produce a 5 fish bag weighing 19 lbs.  2 ozs. Next time you fish thick weed mats near spawning flats try a buzz frog for better results.
