Gray in color, dark blue along the back with a more silvery hue along the sides, with a gold tint around the chest. Elongated dorsal and anal fin, deeply forked tail.
25 pounds (11.3 kg) is a more common big-sized fish, but permit can reach upwards of 50 pounds (22.7 kg).
In the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts and as far south as Brazil.
Grass flats, sand flats, and channels when close to shore, but venture offshore to spawn. When offshore, permit look for wrecks or debris for coverage.
Crabs, clams, shrimp, and small fish.
