Houston Angler Wins BFL Event at Sam Rayburn

Boater Dicky Newberry of Houston, Texas, won the Walmart BFL tournament title on the Sam Rayburn Reservoir with a 19-pound, 10-ounce catch. Newberry won a first-place prize of $4,000 at the Cowboy Division event as well as $2,000 for winning the Ranger Cup bonus.

Boater Dicky Newberry of Houston caught a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 10 ounces March 12 to win $6,000 in the BFL Cowboy Division tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir.

The remaining top-10 anglers from the event included:

  • 3rd: Nathan Stroup, Willis, Texas, five bass, 17-10, $1,334
  • 4th: Victor Hawkins, Sugar Land, Texas, five bass, 17-5, $933
  • 5th: John Hatton, Buna, Texas, five bass, 16-13, $800
  • 6th: John Lemaire, Hemphill, Texas, five bass, 16-11, $733
  • 7th: Alan Fitts, Hemphill, Texas, five bass, 15-8, $667

Pitts wins co-angler title

John Pitts of Baton Rouge, La., caught a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 2 ounces March 12 to win $2,000 in the Co-angler Division.

The next BFL Cowboy Division tournament is scheduled for April 2 on Lake Livingston in Livingston, Texas. After the fifth Cowboy Division tournament is complete, the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Nov. 3-5 Regional Championship on Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, Ark. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy pick-up, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
