Giant Wels Catfish

Giant Wels Catfish

This massive wels catfish was caught by Dino Ferrari in the Po Delta Italy. At 8.7 feet long, it weighed a massive 280 lb. While extremely large, it is just shy of the current IGFA all-tackle world record of 297 lb 9 oz, which was also caught in the Po.

Ferrari caught this monster catfish on a crankbait. Wels catfish are aggressive and will readily strike lures. They have even been documented ambushing pigeons that are bathing along the shore.

Wels catfish are not native to Italy and the Po River. They were introduced there intentionally. With no natural predators and optimal temperatures, wels catfish have been able to grow to an extremely large size in this river.
