Getting Others Involved In The Outdoors
FWCThe WAFWA Hunter, Angler and Shooting Sports Participation (HASSP) Committee is hosting a workshop on hunter, angler and shooting sports recruitment and retention in the United States and Canada. Participants from state fish and wildlife agencies and wildlife NGO's are invited to attend.
This workshop, sponsored by a grant from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), is scheduled for November 30 through December 2, 2010, In Jackson, Wyoming.
The agenda will cover five main topics:
Hunter, Angler and Shooting Sports Programs - Many states are finding innovative ways to reach new hunters and anglers. However, many states are also fighting barriers to recruitment and retention programs and evaluating why some programs do not achieve goals. This section will take a look at successful and unsuccessful programs.
Internal Buy-in and Education - One of the keys to successful recruitment and retention programs is buy-in from agency employees. This section will examine how other states and organizations have accomplished this.
Partnerships and Volunteers - This section will discuss how states have developed effective, long term partnerships with sportsmen's organizations and other land management agencies to further hunter and angler recruitment and retention goals.
Evaluation and Marketing - Over the years there have been many evaluations and studies in regard to hunter, angler and shooting sports recruitment and retention. With all of this information, what is most important for us to know and how do we effectively use the information that is available?
Regulations and Access - These continue to be some of the most important barriers to recruiting and retaining hunters and anglers. What have other states implemented, and what has been most effective?
This workshop is designed for agencies and organizations to discuss recruitment and retention efforts, learn about other programs currently happening in the US and Canada. There will be no vendors or displays at the workshop.
If your agency has had experience with any of these topics, we would like to hear about your experience (processes and outcomes). Please come prepared to share your successes as well as the challenges that you have faced or are facing with these topics.
